It came into diuscussion between myself and a few mates before and got me thinking.

I do the dishes, pin up and bring in the washing and sweep the floors and over all just help out wherever I see the oppertunity at home because I dont have to pay board till I get a job blah blah blah...

One of my mates feeds all of their pets (rats, owls, horses, dogs and a cat etc), dishes, floors, yardwork from time to time etc.

And the other doesnt really do anything except wash his car every now and then. His mum and dad do everything for him.

    What about you?

haha, i do more around the house when i'm home for a lengthy time. its just that when i get home for the weekend, all that is asked of me is to help with the trash haha.

i make time to do my own laundry, but i still find my mother doing it for me when i'm home. she gets to it sooner than i do, since i sleep in a bit when home. i'm thankful for it though :)

I do my own laundry mostly, but yeah mum tends to beat me too it most days since I can sleep half the day away if I had the oppertunity.

Growing up, I was assigned regular chores both around the house but in the yard and garden as well as helping cut split and haul winter firewood when I reached high school age. Unless I was working in the woods with dad or we were harvesting a big portion of the garden Saturday was housecleaning day. Siblings divided the work, vacuuming, dusting, cleaning the bathroom were rotated week to week. We all did our own laundry.

Additionally, with both parents holding careers in the education field, meal preparation during the week sometimes fell on our shoulders. The fixings were usually ready to prepare, with specific instructions on what the menu was to be. Meal time was usually around 6 PM... if I wasn't needed to prepare I was due on the property at 5 PM regardless of when dinner was ready.

Post meal, it was my responsibility to help clear the table, rinse dishes and sometimes help wash them depending on how busy mom and dad were that evening. I used to complain bitterly on how busy I was kept but looking back, I think it was for the better on so many levels.... on developing a sense of responsibility, grasping the concept of having a hand in managing a household, and being kept occupied during a period of time where too much free time was the precursor to either me getting into trouble or or otherwise learning how to wallow in self pity and refining the art of becoming depressed.

I see life as just being too fucking easy these days.

Back at home in DR, I really didnt do anything. Wow, that sounds bad, I would go with my mom and do the groceries? does that counts?
We had a maid, who was there everyday, so there wasnt much to do anyways. I was in charge of entertainment? I rented movies
Here in Ottawa, I always do the dishes, take the trash out, do my laundry, cook for me and my roommate if she's here, vacuum, clean the bathroom, I kinda do a lot of stuff here. The only place that is kinda messy at the moment is my room, but Im cleaning up today.

my mom just got a maid. just a once a week sort of deal. living with the walking pigpens has gotten to be just plain too much for my mom to keep up with. i don't know why no one can put away their shit. damn. the woman's almost 60, help out a little fucking bit. but anyway, she's as happy as a pig in shit now that she's got a maid.

do you still talk to her? i had some friends who had maids, but they treated their maids like shit. the maids had no privacy, no respect, no peace. it was bullshit. i'd think that if someone was living in your home, they'd eventually be treated well, right?

She didnt live at home, but she went there everyday and sometimes brought her kids with her, though very rarely.
I dont talk to her anymore, because she's not working at my home anymore, but we were great to her, of course. No reason to treat anybody bad, but I completely know what you mean, I've seen it so many times.

I've basically stopped talking to people because of that too, is just inhumane and wrong, just because a person works for you, doesnt mean they are your slave. I've seen people who would insult them and horrible, and when I would say something, they would be like ohh she doesnt mind. Im like ok... you pay her, she's not gonna tell you, anything.

yup. that's exactly how it'd go. perfectly normal-seeming people going all shitty on their elp. WTF? but i've seen people do that to their moms, too. that's even more disgusting, i think.

Abusing domestic help demonstrates that just because some people have a pile of money doesn't mean they have any class.

I'm remembering more of what I used to do... feeding pets to walking and cleaning up after... cleaning out the dog pen periodically, shoveling snow, filling the wood box... leaf raking, lawn mowing, emptying trash, hauling trash to the dump (Sundays after church)--- which I loved because that was a chance for me to drive once I got my license! I was kept very occupied by folks who were very wise to do so.
