Many compassionate consumers imagine Horizon organic milk as being from happy, free-range cows grazing in an open field. They also may assume that the cows aren't sold to a premature death by slaughter.
Unfortunately, consumers are wrong on both counts. Here's the story behind that leaping, happy bovine on all of those milk cartons.

Salon.com links seem to expire quickly. Here is an updated link.

    Land of milk and money
Critics say Horizon and other mass-production dairies don't deserve the organic label -- and that the USDA needs to come up with a real definition.

horizon has been busted numerous times for breakin organic rules. but they continue to pay good money for the label. do not be fooled, they are a large factory farm. one of thier bigger competitors, although i do not represent or speak for them, i do work for them from time to time. it is Organic Valley, and thier cheese and milk are in most parts of the country. i have been to many of the farms that they get thier milk from and most if not all are familly owned small farms. alot of my friends have desk jobs, or jobs driving milk trucks for them. i think even the 'kiddie village' bus is still parked up at one of thier buildings. i would suggest yall support my friends up thier and buy organic valley.

In USA as I understand the situation, legislation concerning food labling is far less stringent than in the UK or Australia.Maybe you should campaign for stricter labling rules.

I did get to read the repot .On page 4 it was reporting on a organic Jersey farm -the type of milk we should consume IMO - and saying how they were being disadvantaged by the likes of Horizon. All I can suggest is to vote with your wallet. The other thing is talk to supermarket managers about what you would prefer to buy.
