i'm planning on relocating in a few months, when i've (hopefully) finished my degree. where i go will depend on where i can find work, but i'm trying to decide where to look. i'm looking for small cities or larger towns, with enough of a main street and/or public transportation system that i can do without a car, at least for a little while, if i really have to. specifically i'm looking for somewhere with a good community arts scene, that's hippyish/new agey/touristy enough that i could earn some cash on the side reading tarot cards, without treading on the toes of any established local readers. i want to stay within new york state, because i promised my soon-to-be-ex that i'd keep the kids close enough to visit. a good co-op, CSA, & homeschool community is a plus. so far i've considered ithaca & canandaigua; another friend suggested woodstock but i haven't really looked into that area of the state yet. oh, and since i'm considering working towards a BFA, nearby colleges are also a consideration. can anyone think of anywhere else i should be looking?
I don't know about now but at one time New Paltz was nice very small and they say there is a college there but I never saw it. I'm sure its not as cool as it was. Things never stay cool for very long.
well, so far i've got my quest narrowed down to "vaguely east-ish". my friend michael went to college at new paltz and was trying to get me to move there at the time, but i was stuck in buffalo with the evil first husband. i've heard it's still cool. there is at least one new age shop that offers tarot readings; whether or not they'll have a position available, or if there'll be too much competion to read on my own, who knows. i probably should email them anyway. the biggest drawback is that ulster county in general is fuckin' expensive and crawling with eco-yuppies.
i have yet to see any place outside of the northwest that careters to the family types, maybe there just too much city all over on this side , and there rules overflow into the small towns and countrysides, i hope you find somewere that feels like home
Don't forget to check out Ithaca, about an hour's drive from Binghamton. Its surroundings are worth looking into as well. While there, don't forget to check out the Commons pedestrian shopping mall in the center of town. It has alot of unique shops. Keep in mind, though, that while it may be ok to get around by bicycle in the main section of town, if you venture elsewhere, unless you are really physically fit, you may find it difficult. The hills on the outskirts can be quite steep and Cornell U lies at the top of one of these hills.
you know, i am madly in love with ithaca, but my parents may be moving in with my cousins who live near there, and that's not a plus. i'm wanting to keep as much physical distance between my parents as me as possible. i'm thinking about binghamton, though, mainly because i have a friend there, and rent's cheaper than some of the other places i've looked, but new paltz is looking attractive too because the college is supposedly so wonderful for fine arts. plus it's prettier.
Binghamton, New Paltz, Nyack, Potsdam (i'm told) there are plenty of places in New York with good people - we've talked about a few of these though
im stuck here in buffalo for right now. lemme tell you im bursting to get out. allentown is the hippest area of the city, but thats not saying much. i need to finish up school so i can move on. Ithica is a great town...ive been there many times..for musefest..i also have stayed there with friends of friends..ITHICA IS GORGES hahaha
^^ive moved two times, i always seem to end up home....i have love and respect for this area but i just need to experience other places.............but im here right now to accomplish things and eventually move on. buffalo will always be my home!!
ithaca and if you can deal with a harsher world albany got some good drum and base, mentally ill, milkdud, hip hop, lots of hardcore if thats your thing, if you want the average person to be nice to you, and not have to deal with shootings and corrupt cops (firsthand on that one) move to vermont, but ithaca's probably the best, troy sucks but theres some good kids, stay the fuck away from saratoga springs, its yuppie as hell and full of trustifarins who think its cool to huff the methane that leaks out of the park and yeah that sounds like it makes no sense but its true
Ithaca is mad cool. Canandaigus is cool, not as cool as Ithaca, but bigger. Corning is nice. Geneseo is cool, but small. Potsdam seemed like a cool place when I hitchhiked through there earlier this year.
Woodstock or New Paltz is kool. I live in Woodstock and if I did not have my studio here would be in New Paltz. Funny though where you are now is a blend of both towns.
syracuse! LMAO only kidding....I vote for Ithaca and Saratoga Springs..........but as we all know Amsterdam, Holland.....no not the one off the thurway, is hippy capital of the world. LOL I travel every year for queensday in amsterdam. hippy heaven and a riot!!
If ur thinkin of stayin in NY still then why dont u check out Schoharie County. Its a beautiful county and its small enough that theres public transportation and one heck of a community. We also have a college if you wanna check it out the website is http://www.cobleskill.edu/ the name is Suny Cobleskill if you wanna do a search and see more on it. There is housing on campus and off campus and the childcare program there is great. Plus you could def. get a place withing walking distance of the college or just take the bus or hitch a ride. Schoharie County is a small county but its a great place to raise your kids. Prolly why I have stayed here for so long. I have spent my whole life here and if you dont mind the winters then its a great place. There isnt the hustle bustle like in Albany or Troy or Ithica although you can find nice places there too. But we have a lot of arty type things that go on within the county like a yoga studio that my friend owns and an art gallery, all natural stores, tatoo studios and a dance studio. There are quite a few things goin on at the college year round too. The big bands are great around here and Albany is only a heartbeat away if you got transportation. If you consider moving here you can always look at www.pennysaveronline.com for apartments within the county just look for cobleskill. Thats prolly the best area. You can find a lot of hippies and freestylin people out here but u just gotta look. Heck my families a bunch of hicks. I shouldnt really call them that but we come from a farmin' homegrownin' huntin family LOL Good luck If you need anythin answered I would be happy to help ya out. Peace
i was in rochester for college and it's got a nice farmer's market and some ecologically friendly housing for college students off-campus. cold though of course. windy and cold.
