It seem me and others here in the hip forums have been under fire lately. Why? Because we are hippies, aparently. How weird is that? It even happens here in the forum called "Hippies". I'd expect it from people on the street. But a place called Hippy.com is not where it thought I'd be attacked for the "lable" or "catagory" of hippy. So yes, i do believe I'm a hippie. Its not a stereotype that i make a concious effort to conform to, my appeance does reflects my beliefs. And being a "hippie" is a great way to show the world that their are still people around who stand for peace and freedom. If you are proud to be a hippy too, sign this thread. Let the people know that you are not ashamed to use the word HIPPIE, or whatever else you are, and no one will make you ashamed!
alright, alright. i didnt ask for your hate. i think your all taking this thread alot more seriously than i do. my point is, one should be free to be what he wants. Your definition of freedom seems to be staying outside of all catagories. In my opinion, thats probably not possible. so i am what i am, you are what you are. Being a hippie is all about being an individual. the only true hippy stereotype that i know know is that we are all different. i didnt make this tread to insult, i do my best not to insult, and all i get here for my humble and only half serious opinion is insults. anyhow, if any body wants to agree with me, or just disagree more tastefully, that would be awesome(c'mon, i know theres a hippie posting in this "hippies" forum somewhere)
There are plenty of people that stand for peace and freedom, and they're not all called "hippies". And yes, it definately is a sterotype. Why label yourself when you can just stand up for what you believe in, as an individual. The hippie fashion was just that: A fashion of the 60s.
Sure man, i agree mostly. But where does steroetype end and legitimite group begin? I assume you would call your self a member of the counterculture, or if not, then most people here do. is it a stereotype or somthing more? and if actual hippies existed once, why not now? to me, "hippie" is a movement, a certain idealology that i belive in, and therefore nothing to hide. A punk is like that, another type of counterculture, and they can be self-declared without worry. keep on rockin
Well, I don't label myself...but the sterotype applies to everything the "hippie" name is latched on to, IMO. Not that all hippies are as the stereotype perceives them... But a lot of hippies in the 60s did it soley because it was the fashion craze at the time. That's why the people delcaring themselves hippies today are probably more likely to actually be involved in the idealolgoy/lifestyle.
make sence to me. im really just curious as to why when someone posts about owning a VW and having long hair its all good in the hood, but as soon as someone says hippie, its a meltdown. i really truely dont understand this phenomema. peace out brothers(or good day, as a non-hippie would say)
OK, I'll throw some love in this thread: I , drumminmama, of long hair, fuzzy legs and armpits, purple (bifocal) glasses, who writes for a living, paints for fun to jazz and jamband music, has been vegetarian for more than two decades, got married at a Rainbow gathering to a tie dye artist and named my kid ARLO, somewhat solemnly swear that I am a proud, happy to be me and glad a bunch peeps like the look enough to copy me ;P 100 percent granola Colorado Rocky Mountain lovin' FREAK! If you don't like it, kiss my radical ***. Don't be a sterotype..make the next one! Labels are for wine bottles: Christo
Yeah, dont conform to the old hippies' looks and sayings unless they are your own... that is quite lame. And you ARE conforming to what you believe a hippie should be. Why else would you mention it?
I, for one, agree with you. Complete individuality is a great idea, and one that I hear being cranked out a whole lot lately, but it's not in any way practical. Uniting under a common banner is necessary to survive outside of the mainstream. This whole trend of attacking people for not being individuals is amazingly hypocritical... the kind of people that would follow that sort of logic aren't the kind of people that you'd want to approve of you anyway- so don't worry about it. It's really a stupid topic to debate...
Thank you! All Im saying, is that no matter how hard you try, upon seeing you, I or anyone else could stereotype you. why try to escape the impossible? Im not trying to conform to anything. as i see it, there is no set hippie image. Hippies are all so different! and all you people talk about is image. Im talking about life style. I live to a set of morals that are best known as "hippie". why hide it? it a good way to live. i didnt read about it in a book and decide to become it, im just a liberal friendly person. thats seems to be more than some people here can say for themselves. if your not a hippie, i wont try to convert you. if your a pot smoker, i wont say "wear a tie or something! you look like a stoner! thats a lable, to always be avoided!" I'll just accept you if you have a kind heart, even if your a republican. so lets not beat up on me. i wouldnt do it to you. and if anyone wants to admit to being a hippy, thats what this thread is all about! peace all.
well, there are liberals who are not "hippy" in appearance of self-description, heck, I know liberals in Highlands Ranch! (a upper-middle class mostly white suburb south of Denver. 58 percent Republican, the difference split between Dems and Independents as the lone Green reregistered for Kucinich) so while hippies are inclined to be liberal to lefty -radical, not all lefties or liberals are "hippies." Some women are redheads. Not all redheads are women. I often wonder who gets informed they are hippies by people around them. I was, in the late 70s.
I am standing up to be counted but not to be trodden down for my beliefs and such - Had enough of that recently. Err, I googled up a forum safe for LGBT people and thought this was a gay forum! But I'm happy all the same as long as I can be myself and make some great friends along the way!
i think that lables are a bit over attacked. I am not saying that it is right to try and fit into one or lable other people but it seems to me that it is taken to seriously. OF course be yourself thats good. i think that it would be ok to call yourself a hippy if you had many of those belifes. People tend to think that if you call yourself a hippy you are trying to mold yourself into one. It is just a vague name for a type of person to help get an idea of their personality.
Believe it or not, there are people out there who enjoy the words "I'm a hippy". If thats what turns us on, why get down on us about it? You can sit there and make arguments about the word hippie being a label, or a stereotype, but all you're doing is getting all uptight about how another person has chosen to interface with life. I can understand that some people might be thinking of how stereotypes are bad things. They *are* bad things, but the term hippy (ive heard) was originally a badge worn in reaction to the term being coined as a derogatory. I don't conform completely to the sterotype of a hippy, but I enjoy calling myself one. By doing so, I affirm that my long hair and other flower-power attributes are things I am proud of. Whenever I call myself a hippy, I am reaffriming the fact that, though I was born in '69 and have no recollection of the 60's themselves, I thought they were a pretty cool time. As a kid, I would watch things on teevee about protestors and civil rights, and saw they were good. I would see 70's longhairs, and be entranced by their mystery. I don't call myself a hippy so I can mold myself into a stereotype, but because it is a symbol to me of something I value, and it makes me happy. I call myself a hippy to perplex my associates, to bond with my other hippyish friends, and to make a statement which confuses many people due to the nature of the question 'what is a hippy'. I like many things that are associated with hippies, and at the same time, not all of them. But still, I dig it! So before you dissect my words to find a fault you can react to (or react to something in my words you found fault in), stop to think: why does this make me mad, and why do I want to strike back? All I'm doing is trying to feel good, and I'm not causing you harm.
it was. Next summer will be anniversary 10. planning a throw down party...because Rainbow had no reception.
