Okay, so here is the dilemma. I have a dream. I want to become a pga tour player so bad i can taste it. and for those who dont know what that is its a proffesional golfer. I practice my ass off and i read tons of books on golf and watch videos and my life revolves around it basically. its my passion. Im 18 now though and my mom is on my ass about going to school and so is my whole family, and i started community college but stopped going because it seems absolutely pointless to me. i dont learn anything relevant. i know more things about history than the history teacher did. and i dont believe in most of the things im learning about. i want to get a job and pursue my dream, i made it a 4 year plan that at the end of 4 years when im 22 im going to try and get on tour. and in the meantime i will get a job and practice my ass off to get that good. i know some people will probably read this and be like wow go to school you dumbass, but school is not for me. i was in the honor society up until my freshman year then i started skipping high school and had to drop out. so im not stupid. this is something i want so bad. i know its my destiny. and id rather fail at trying to accomplish my dream than go to school and wish i had went for it all. the problem is school cuts into my golf MAJORLY. there is no way that if i went to school i could get good enough. my game isnt at that level yet. and when i played for the college this fall the golf coach was such a dumbass i knew way more about the game than he did. so some wise person on hip forums, please give me guidance.

    He's a bit of advice;

You seem to think you're smarter than others, this will only get you so far and isn't really a good quality.

If that is really your dream than pursue it. Give it everything you can, be willing to sacrifice big time for it.

You're young so now is the time to go for it, later will be too late.

You can always go to post secondary school when you're older if your dream doesn't work out, so I wouldn't worry about that.

If you're actually really good at golf, then I suggest your follow your dream. I trust that by your interest you should know what being good at golf is. If you're not that good yet but think you're something else, I'd recommend you listen to a coach.

You're 18, you can do whatever you want. I'd recommend finishing high school, but after that follow your dreams. As I said, if they don't work out, you can always go to college or university later. If you're no where in the golf game by 25-26, it isn't likely to happen. That might be a good time to think about finding a job or going back to school.

thanks lunar. i agree its not a good quality as well, im working on it  but yeah that is what ive been telling everyone, is give me four years. if im 22 and know i cant make it i will fold, and go to school. but i KNOW i can do it. if i work hard enough and put enough sweat and tears in i know i can do it. i think im gonna green light it and go all out. that is all i can do, and if im 22, 23, and know i cant, then i can fall back on school. but im just not content with a life of just going to school and never trying to achieve greatness.

That's all you can do man. 18 is so young. 22 is young too. Between the two are 4 years that can be put to maximum use if you choose to do so. Don't waste them, try harder than your best. Regardless of if a golf career takes off for you or not, you'll know for the rest of your life that you tried as hard as you could for 4 years to make it happen, and that's all that matters.

Never accept mediocrity, but never be too stubborn to accept defeat.

My cousin was also very passionate about golf. He ended up getting in a motorcycle accident and tore a lot of muscles, and could never really play the same again.

Why not apply for a job at a golf course (this is what my cousin did)? It would give you an excuse to be around the site and you'll already be there when you want to practice! It would get you into the 'crowd' as it were, and you could build on that...

Nevermind, 18 is as young as they legally come.

Never be afraid to fail, especially when you're young! Those years are a grace period that reward you with buffer time to figure out what it is you're going to do.

Be what you want to be. Do what you want to do. Only ever give in if you're defeated.

Don't ever settle for anything less than perfect until you have a good reason to. You can be the best at anything as long as you really care about it.

It was years ago, he's married and happy now. He still works on a course in the summer, and I think (and hope) that it's enough for him.

That last part is what i really had to pound into my head. The first time i really thought i could do it was when my neighbor said, "youre young go for whatever you like i wish i could have when i was young i didnt have the balls too." and thinks like this just help me know im on the right track. i feel satisfied with my life when im practicing and know im doing what i want in my heart. i just dont feel right sitting in class, when i could be out practicing perfecting my game. if i could retire a pro golfer, id be the happiest old man in the world.

Many people don't ever necessarily feel a calling towards someting in life. Feel grateful and don't waste it. :)

Good then, make sure it happens or at least comes close. Don't let it become the 'Death of a Salesman'.

It's just an old story play about a guy who really wanted something, but never really wanted to make it happen.

Go for it and good luck my friend. :)
