my parents are hippies and they raised me hippie, so thats y i am one. i remember when i was little, my mom making all my clothes and giving me beatles cds, and me and my brother jamming to ACDc. and in the summer time, they sleep outside on our screaned in porch. and my mother is also a budhhist, like me. i was raised with those principles. and there were always feelings of love and security. and they always taught me to be a free spirit, and dress however i wanted, and live however i wanted, and believe whatever i wanted. and they always taught me to never hurt anyone, and return hate for love. so its pretty awsome having hippie parents. soooo neone else?
The hippie influence in my world, was my aunt. Unfortunately my parents don't take my aspirations in music and existentialism & atheism seriously. My aunt was involved in the things that went on in the 60's. She almost got to go to Woodstock, but my grandparents locked her in her room and she "missed the bus". My parents still believe that my non-belief in God and rejection of Christianity is just a teenage rebellion phase that I'm going to eventually drop, and "Come back to the Church". But I have no intention of doing so, because I see no sense in believing in something that is not perceptable by any human sense, hence the existential side of my athestic tendencies. But more about my aunt, she really got me into a lot of different kinds of music that I still enjoy to this day. Namely the music by the guy that chick's face is next to, which happens to be my aunt's biggest influence. But she does have her dark side. She's never really welcome at any family gatherings although her children and grandchildren are. She does seem to be bitchy most of the time, but who isn't. Her and my mom never really get along, yet she loves my cousins and there kids. But even through all of this darkness, My aunt really shines a light of influence, for me at least.
My parents were hippies. Mostly my dad. He always told me about the confusion of his time with the draft, 1968 democratic convention etc going on and both of my parents introduced me to their music at a young age. They also influenced me with their ideas and I'm glad my parents were around in the 60's even though they are older than most of my peer's parents.
No, not while I was growing up at least. Once upon a time, my parents, mostly my mom, was into the hippie movement. But they both "grew up" and became republicans. They still regail me with tales of their youth and such occasionally, but I had a very conservative upbringing. I did however hear the music from a young age which influenced me. For the most part, they give me more support in my hippie-fied endeavors, and they sort of understand somewhat the reason I am the way I am, although we hit heads, so to speak, on many issues. This has really taught me to keep my mouth shut about politics and stuff as long as I am living with people they conflict with. I still love my parents, we just dissagree about a lot of stuff. But then again, so do I and, well, about everyone else I know with maybe, like a 1% of people that I DON'T conflict too much with. My parent's are also fundimentalist Christians. This has also lead me to the same topic of faith. If it is conflicting with theirs, I keep my mouth shut and don't say anything conflicting with their beleifs, in order to maintain peace in the home, and to keep somewhere to sleep. At least until I get out of college. I plan on being a hippie parent though.
So rayne lyric... You're also someone who rejects Christianity, yet your parents hold on to the belief that you'll come back to the church someday. Is that somewhat true? What's the story on that?
No man! I don't reject Christianity at all man! I am just more liberal in my views on it. I basically only hold to the techings of Christ. I think the OT is only for a historical source or whatever and with the exception of the 10 commandments, we aren't bound to any laws or anything like that from it. I don't beleive that the books of the new testement (except the gospels) is any more the word of God than a charles stanley book. I think that all we need to follow Christ's examples are HIS teachings. I am a pacifist, I don't really beleive God will send anyone except satan and the demons to hell (Jesus duidn't really teach this. The only people he said it to were the religious people actually, and on the cross he said "Forgive them father, they know not what they do" Not "Show them the errors of their ways, so they will repent and become Christians so that they can go to heaven".) I also don't reject everything other religions say. I think there is wisdom and truth in other religions as well. I don't think tht the Bible, not the ot and not the Gospels, is the infallible word of God (there are errors that God would surely not make) but the general jist of Christ's teachings comes across fine. I just choose not to bring up my liberal views because I know they won't change their mind, and it would do a lot more harm than good. Not to mention, I am still not completely sure of these beleifs anyway, they are just something I have been thinking about.
I don't know, maybe some of my beleifs even lean towards a fusion of Christianity and new age. I also beleive in spiritual energy, the law of action and reaction (karma), and ghosts and such. Stuff not technically taught by Christ, but that also seems pretty evident in everyday life. ***EDIT*** I don't think that New Age can really be a fusion can it? I mean, it already is, so saying it is a fusion between Christianity and New Age would be like saying a fusion between a cake and desert or something maybe...
You see I'm gonna have to disagree with you on that. I think that most of what Bible taught us was just a lot of rhetorical laws and rules, and Christ only confirmed that. I do agree with commandments 4-10, but only to their immediate definitions (as in you really shouldn't cheat on your wife or husband, that's just cruel), but I don't follow the current interpretations, because I don't think adultery has anything to do with masturbation, or pre-marital sex. But commandments 1-3, being an existential atheist, I don't comply with. I think that if there really was a God, and he was a very understanding individual, he'd just tell us to worship him in any way that we see fit.
my mom used to eat shrooms and play guitar my dad smuggled qualudes over the border they were'nt hippies, but had the idea and they have the nerve to lecture me on smoking pot, ha
My dad was a hippie, but i havent seen him in a long, long time. I remember him allways listening Uriah Heep, and he was so strange to me with his clothes and the long hair.He had that groovy pink glasses. He was a dude from what i remember.
My parents listen to good music, admit to using LSD and other drugs in there life time... The seem hip to me.
My parents were hippies, especially my mom. Now they're not so hippy anymore but they always tell me these grazy stories about that time. It's cool.
My parents sound like a lot of yours, they weren't hippies but had 'the idea'. Now that I'm old enough and responisble they are open and accepting to my pot-smokin. My dad has gone off on some tangents about the hypocricy of keeping alcohol legal and weed illegal. He's big into the 'nothing chemical' thing, he said he never touched a chem or anything cooked up by man, a damn smart philosophy from an intelligent person. They frequently tell me they'd rather have me go smoke a joint then get wasted, and they always make pot head jokes to me in good nature, it's a great relationship. My uncle was the real hippie. My Dad told me the story once of being at a Floyd concert when they were 17-18 and my uncle pulls my dad into the bathroom at the venue. He pulls something out and my dad goes "what the hell is that roll of tape for" It was a roll of amber window pane 'cid he was sellin!! I've also seen pictures of Dad and Uncle's patch of 6-7foot tall pot plants they had.. oh to live in the 70's. Dad said he never touched acid though, again nothing chemical - idea just didn't sit well with him. My uncle lived that lifestyle and he's learned a lot from it, he lived a lot of time hand-to-mouth while my Dad took the traditional job route and was able to provide a great lifestyle for my sister and I. Uncle Dave eventually got involved in some not so shining sides of that lifestyle, as the times changed I'm sure most did. He found himself as a runner from Florida to NY (you can imagine what he was running from south to north...), it eventually got him in serious enough situations he had to get out for fear of his own life. Both see the benefits in each others decisions, my uncle never got the chance to have kids and that is his biggest regret in life. He's settled down in North Carolina now and owns a few of the biggest head shops in town so stop by and give him some business! Like I said he's settled down, but every year he still makes it to Bonnaroo with his old hippie buddies to relive some of the experience. so yeah... some cool history in my blood for sure! Damn I wish I could grow like my Uncle did though, you guys should see the pics.
I wish I had hippy parents. To be honest I'm not sure how I became a hippy. Both my parents are hard core conservatives. My dad especially. he loves Bill O Reilly, Sean Hannity, and Rush Limbaugh and pretty much believes liberals are the devil. He does have some Beatles albums but the hippiedom ends there.
