If you want good metal, you don't want to support metal -- you want to support only the good metal, otherwise the genre gets awash in mediocre stuff. Those mediocre bands, labels, magazines, etc. are starting to give up and go back to indie and punk, which is awesome. Cheer the fail of this intermediate, dying genre. For more information, see Assimilation.

Haven't heard of many people supporting the bands they actually dislike..

Help me understand. Is that saying that absolutely NOTHING in modern metal is worthwhile?

No, but that metal after 1994 has been offcourse, and that it needs to die to be reborn :)

You are a loonie. It's not about the genre, it's about the band or I guess even more, the album. Who cares 90% of metal is shitty, just ignore that stuff since there are obviously other people enjoying it.

Other people enjoy all sorts of stupid shit; that doesn't mean I should approve of it. What backward logic!

Other people enjoy dumping toxic waste in rivers. What are you gonna do about that? LOL

I agree with parts of what both of you said. I don't think metal can be killed and reborn, besides that, is probably best just to ignore the shit.

Also, too many people do listen to shit, but they should be dealt with by promoting good music, not by trying to destroy the base of their collective fandom.

Maybe there's a dual truth on that as well:

Promote the good, and debase the bad.

Dying to be born again must not be such a bad experience...?

Modern metal certainly leaves a lot to be desired, although there are a few fantastic bands today. Personally, any metal that doesn't fall under the umbrella of what I actually like, I can't stand. By that I mean that anything that I don't really like, I hate. I can't stand most thrash, speed, and death metal, even though there are a few bands in those subgenres that I greatly enjoy.

    My personal favorites:
    Metallica (I know, I know)
    Mastodon
    Opeth
    In Flames
    Dark Tranquillity
    Dream Theater
    Porcupine Tree
    Pagan's Mind
    Amon Amarth

I like pretty much anything with a melodic foundation.

To say that metal needs to be "killed" and reinvented is a stretch. There are a lot of different directions being explored today, although I do think that most metal bands are complete shit.

Toxic waste bothers me because it's unhealthy for me and nature. Music you don't like bothers you because you don't like other people listening to metalbands of which you think it's not good metal. See the difference?
Of course you shouldn't approve it, they don't need your approval anyway. See, that's the problem with people bothered by music they don't like. They think their concern matters, it doesn't. You better just enjoy the stuff you like.

No, I don't see the difference: both have impacts on the world around us.

If you want better metal, destroy bad metal. It's that simple.

Music is evolution man. Music is a sea of infinite possibilities of human experience, don't restrict yourself.

It wouldn't be at all a bad thing, I was just speaking to my own perceived impossibility of it.

Besides, I'm still in high school, nearly all of my friends (and everyone else) listen to shitty music. I feel I just have to accept it. Besides, why can't the move from bad to good be a transient one?

Metal is only lame if you listen to the mainstream stuff. I can't stand anything that has "core" in it.

Black and Death metal for me.

How can a band kill a genre? That's total nonsense.

Indeed, you don't have to accept or listen to it. Just tolerate it. It's all about personal taste in the end, why waste all that energy on something that other people like and you don't?

This is why we don't understand each other:

There are secondary consequences to tolerating anything.

Tolerate the Klan in your neighborhood, if not.
