Yeah i see what you mean. I don't believe in God either, to me it's just an entity that we invented to answer our existential questions and to give us a reason to live. But i just chose not to understand, not to totally believe in science, but not to believe in God, maybe in some superior spirit i guess, like mother nature, but I really don't know. I also see other reasons to live, and reasons to be good to other people, that have nothing to do with being good only to go to "heaven".
Yes... you´re thinking like me about god.. i would say nearly exactly the same "it´s to answer our existential questions and to give us a reason to live"
