Hello fellow Canucks! I don't want this to turn into a huge mud slinging contest but I just wanted to say that I'm happy that Harper won his majority. I'm very far left of center when it comes to social issues and I don't feel as though my civil liberties are threatened by this party. He has said that he's not going to touch abortion or gay rights and I believe him. Obviously they're doing a good job fiscally so the only thing that I will bring up is an argument to Layton saying that this government is destroying small business by giving tax cuts to large corporations. What the budget concentrates on are not the Walmarts and Starbucks of the world but in large part the energy and resource sectors. I hate to break it to you but the energy/resource sectors employs a large portion of the population. If they do well, people have jobs and don't have to rely on handouts. Finally, we need the F35. Our F18's are an aging fleet. I know, I know, I wish we could all hold hands and sing cumbya (sp) by the campfire but unfortunately that isn't the world that we live in. I'm anti Afghanistan, I don't think that we should be anywhere near the place but this is a separate issue. But I digress... Now we give them four years to run the country. Worst case scenario, he brings out a bunch of terrible mandates and we vote him out. Best case, he surprises the people that will never vote Blue just because of the colour and does some wonderful things for the country. Let's keep this civil please. G'day EH!
We'll keep it civil as our civil freedoms decline... We'll be one big cold Texas before you know it. Drinking age 21, capital punishment... Dirty power, corporate power, fire power... those are the important powers I guess.
New prisons, extremely harsh drug laws (mandatory minimums that target youth), strict police presence, new police and new judges (who are buddy buddy with Harper, thus very strict on all criminal behaviour and not likely to be lenient at all), despite the fact that our crime rate has been steadily decreasing since the 90s, no more early release from prison. MMJ patients targeted as criminals and possibly thrown in these new prisons. Our health care system will suffer, tighter security at borders, etc. etc. Yea, enjoy the next 4+ years. Every single person who voted Conservative sold our fucking country. Every one of them.
First off, what's wrong with being strict on criminal behavior? Harper has said that he wanted to be strict on violent crime. Yes, you are right, crime has decreased over the last few years but unfortunately violent crime has increased. No, I don't agree with the harsher drug laws and have written to my MP with my concern. It is my one major concern with this gouvernment and it is a large one. That being said, my concerns with having anyone else in power vastly out weigh it. How will our health care system suffer? By allowing the privatization of certain clinics? All that this will do is make room in our already backlogged system as well as create jobs in the industry. Of course people with money are going to be the only ones going to the clinic but it's like saying that Whole Foods shouldn't be allowed to sell multi vitamins and Organic kale because the people going to the food bank can't afford to shop there. By the way, go ask Layton how good the service was at the Sholdice clinic. That's right, Layton himself has used a private clinic. (legal as it was grandfathered in)
No it hasn't. That's untrue. Where did you get that little "fact" from? First of all, your MP (if Conservative) doesn't care what you think. They will maybe read your email/letter and it will end up in the garbage. The Conservatives have their own agenda, and no one, especially voiceless little citizens will interfere with it. They have proven this time and time again. They will not care or change anything despite receiving (I'm willing to bet) a record number of pissed off letters within the next few years. Secondly, if drug laws were a major concern of yours, a large one, than you wouldn't have voted (I assume) or support the Conservative party. That's an oxymoron. They will introduce harsh drug laws similar to that of the USA. They will put youth and sick medical cannabis users in prisons. Thirdly, you've sent a letter/email to your MP (Conservative?) expressing concern over their drug laws? They probably laughed their ass off as they threw it in the garbage. Oh, it will make room because poor people won't be able to afford to go and receive medical treatment? Yea, you sound like a Conservative supporter. That's no excuse as to why people who are less fortunate shouldn't receive medical treatment. People who can't afford treatment don't deserve to live/get better? Shame on you!
What proof do you have? Sorry I'm in the States a lot and our Right is left of their Left. The above aren't going to happen.
Don't put words in my mouth,I didn't say that the less fortunate shouldn't receive medical treatment. The Cons don't want total privatization, the want certain clinics open to those that want to pay for it. If we go by your logic, we should make it illegal to go to the states and pay for operations or treatments if needed. And please don't make the "well that's just the beginning" statement, it's pure conspiracy. My MP is a NDP btw and yes I realize that it most likely doesn't do shit but it's better than sitting on my hands bitching and crying about it. Another way is to vote and I did but if you'll read my above post you'll realize that I said that I had more issues with the other candidates and their respected parties, which is why I voted Con. I'm not a life long Blue guy I vote for who I detest the least. Four years down the road if I don't like what they did I'll vote for something else. That's the beautiful thing about democracy.
The people crying that the sky is falling because Harper got a majority remind me of me when Reagan won stateside. I was ready to build a fallout shelter in the back yard. I survived Bogeyman Reagan and so did the world. Canada will survive Bogeyman Harper just fine.
Just because their are some people who are too stupid to understand what has been plainly said, by harper himself... only goes to show why we ended up with what we have. As I said a while ago, the con supporters are either morons or rats... take your pick.
Perhaps if you put the same amount of effort into understanding what harper will do to this country as you do into being sarcastic (which I will admit doesn't seem to be much), perhaps you would be better able to have a conversation about this.
Well, you have to admit Deranger, one would have to be a fucking idiot to vote for the potential privatization of our prisons. Once that happens, there's absolutely no turning back. Do you think that privatized prisons are okay for Canada? Would you be happy knowing those who voted Conservative could be responsible for the imprisonment of thousands of non-violent people? I sure as hell wouldn't. Especially if these new laws affected someone I know.
Let me ask you something. Look at the United States. Has longer sentences, no early release, imprisonment of non-violent offenders, and laws that target youth worked for them? Has it affected their country in a positive way? Is the US a safe little haven with their tough on crime laws? To give you an idea; the US today has less than 5 percent of the world's population, but almost 25 percent of the world's incarcerated population. We don't need that kind of tough on crime bullshit here in Canada. That isn't us. And anybody who votes for that kind of thing is anti-Canadian, in my opinion.
Excuse me for butting in here--Ronald Reagan was a cocksucker who busted unions, closed mental institutions ( the mentally ill were walking the streets with no place to go)and he was just like the rest of the republicans who want to privatize everything in sight, especially our social security so that their banker friends can get ahold of it--------all I have to say is I hope Harper is not as bad for you guys as republicans are here for common people. They fuckin' suck.
It really does---and being a workin' stiff,I've been around so many tradesmen that vote republican AGAINST THEIR OWN INTERESTS!! I think people are so delusional that they think they'll be "UP THERE" with the big boys if they vote for 'em,even my old friends that sometimes make over 100 or 200 grand a year. The REAL rich wouldnt piss on em' if their pants were on fire. I just don't get republicans or libertarians. Well--good luck with your own conservative. ---------I'll add one thing--back in 2000,I hoped republicans would take everything--house--senate--supreme court--and then people would finally SEE what those pricks are capable of. It happened and by everything that's holy---THEY ARE GOING TO DO IT AGAIN--even after they trashed the world economy-ruined this one-started bullshit wars--and they're still going to vote them back in!!! Fuckin' dummies have no ability to use any critical thinking at all!!-----------Sorry men--I'll get out of your thread----------
I dont think you should feel like you should get out of this thread. The right wing wave we are currently being drowned under, started in the US... Harper even copied many of the tatics of the tea party including some of their ads...
