Now that I am 4 years short of 50 , I have become more concerned with the typical things that come on with age . Anyway , I was wondering , has anyone found out what little things a person can do to slow down such things that haunt the elderly ?
I have noted that some people can be in their 70's , but their minds are like a 50 year olds...while some 50 year olds have Alzheimers.
Is there any link to diet ?
Are there any things that one could do in their middle age that has proven affective in the battle against the tytpical effects of growing old ?

Please ....any amd ALL input would be VERY welcome.

keep learning and reading and trying new things. I know lots of people who take just a class a semester and a jr. college just to keep their mind in shape. You could try learning a new language or try to play an instrument.

no problem. After I got done with college I didn't want to slack off cause my memory is already bad so I started learning new instruments. I play piano and violin already. Now I am learning trumpet. In college I started learning Spanish and I am continuing it now. When I am fluent in Spanish I am going to start Russian.

For rejuvenating the body and mind, I think raw and/or organic foods are the most potent tools to do that...

and also getting onto some kind of nutritional program that nourishes the endocrine system and replenishes hormones that tend to be neglected and lacking after the age of 35... Maca root powder is great for that, so are raw cacao beans, which also balance neurotransmitters and keep your brain very sharp, and rejuvenate a lot of brain chemicals...

I definatley believe and I know from experience really.. that there's a very strong correlation between what you eat and how sharp your mind is.

Eating more omega 3's in the form of hemp seeds and hemp seed oil can help a lot...Flax oil is good too. Their both incredible for the nervous system and the brain, and they reduce inflammation in the body. They also help a lot with improving your memory and your eye sight..especially if you cut out hydrogenated oils and other fats from your diet while adding in all the good ones(organic olive oil, coconut oil, avocado, etc..)

And goji berries found on the site below help release human growth hormone and are thought to be a longevity food.

Heres a link to my favorite source of raw chocolate, and also a good place to get maca if your interested in that - http://www.sunfood.com/cgi-bin/order/index.cgi?id=793922770253&d=single&item_id=0878&m=home

I guess there is new research that suggests that if you stay active you really can push your body a lot more then we originally thought as you age.

I think healthy diet and GOOD SLEEP have everything to do with how good you feel. Mentally you also have had some great suggestions; language, instruments, etc. You might try cutting out stuff from your diet that's really not good for you at all (like soda). Since I started drinking water 90% of the time (juice and milk the other times) I feel 100 times better than I used to. I sleep better, I'm more alert... yeah just do it!

Also I made a post hear today that talks about kefir, there are lots of health benefits to that as you age as well!

Besides, haven't you heard? Aging is all in your mind, man!

    Sorry to hijack...
Russian is a lot of fun. I would advise you to get to know a native speaker though. There are a lot of sounds in Russian that are really foreign in english and spanish (I also speak both). Just a couple of days learning how the stuff should sound and hints on how to make it sound right would be really helpful.
Maybe you could sit in on a practicum at a local university?

Example (from my Russian experience): the "ui" sound
In order to get used to this sound, put your hands around your throat in a choking manner, lightly choke yourself and say "uy". It's a weird language.

While a healthy diet and activity level are essential, I believe that the best way to keep one's self young is to refuse to buy into society's view of what 'old' is. My mom is almost 60 but is always mistaken for being in her 40's because of how vibrant she is.

A lot of people look at 50 with dread and think "Well I'm starting to get old so I better start acting like it" and sure enough their bodies and minds follow suit. Often such people will make excuses for not continuing to exercise ("I'm getting too old for this"), make excuses for not continuing to learn ("But I finished college years ago!"), and make excuses for simply not keeping their appearance up ("I'm too old to care about how I look"). The last one might sound odd, and even superficial, but to take a few minutes out of the day to put together a flattering outfit (no grandma pants) and put on a bit of lipstick (or whathaveyou) can make a huge difference in how you feel about yourself.

Overall, continue to do the things that make you feel good about yourself, and continue to do the things that make you feel alive, and you will never feel old.

take a lot of vitamins and omega threes. Cutting your hair shoulder length into a volumous cut takes years off your face. Also there's a great book my mom read 'The Art of Aging', which changed her perspective a lot.
