Grow Space and tips

hello my name is DjTronic and i am starting to grow my first plant i was jsut wondering wat size grow area would i need for a single plant that i want to be roughly 2-3 feet...would i need more then a 12" by 12" area. and my next question is since i am only growing one would i be able to use 2 or 3 flouresecent light bulbs that will equal about 4000 lumens will that be enough for all stages of growing the plant?also if anyone has tips for me just let me know
