oh yeah, i've got a friend (15) whose hair is below his shoulder blades and is really thick and beautiful and silky, and when he was growing it he had to keep trimming the ends to stop them getting all skank, a couple of his friends have got long hair and they didn't trim and there hair is really rank

(btw i don't have long hair cause my school is fucking tight, but i'm growing it now!)

I have lots of friends who are either growing out their hair or already have long hair and really it all depends on your own individual hair. I've been growing mine out for a little over a year (from shaved bald to almost 6 inches long) and I've not trimmed my hair the entire time. I don't have any split or dead ends at all and my hair is probably in the best shape it's ever been (no frizz at all), plus it grows super fast so I don't see the need to trim off any length of it. I have another friend who's hair grows super slow so he only needs trims every 6 months just to keep it the length it currently is, although he too doesn't have any problems with split or dead ends either. I think if your hair's got problems like split or dead ends, you should definitely trim them off, but otherwise just go with whatever you want.

I've had my hair long for years, I trim it myself once a month or so and it stops it getting too frizzy and makes it grow alot quicker.

Yes. The hair dries out. And you get "Split Ends". Those prohibit hair growth.
You'll also want to eat lots of protien enriched foods.

That depends on what they say it's "necessary" for...is it necessary for life? no.

when you trim the hair, it promotes regrowth. When you just leave it, the ends split and become damaged (because that is the oldest part of the hair) and eventually the whole bottom section of your hair will become dry and unhappy. Happy hair needs to be trimmed regularly

That's not a very good explaination. Exactly how does trimming hair promote regrowth? Hair grows from the root, not the ends, so how could cutting the ends help the hair grow from the root?
