im thinking about buying the boxed set with all their warners albums in it. should i take the plunge or not? what are peoples favourite grateful dead albums and why?
Who are they? Some kind of gothic rock band that sings about a bunch of dead people? note the sarcasm, and also note that this is probebly the millionth GD thread posted on these forums...
the deads best stuff is live, they mostly recorded albums b/c of their contract made em, but i could be wrong about that. But go for the live shit b4 73 is some of my favorite shows...
One of my favorite Dead Shows was: 10-21-83 The Centrum, Worcester, Ma. (Fri)1: Music, Loser, C. C. Rider, Cumberland, Cassidy, Ramble On, Esau, Big RxR Blues> Promised2: Scarlet> Fire, Uncle John> Playin> Drumz> Truckin> Wharf Rat> Miracle> Touch E: Johnny B. Goode It can be downloaded for free here: http://www.gdlive.com/shn/GD83-10-21.shnf/ but it is shn format. you will need this to decode to mp3: http://www.etree.org/mkw.html or you will need winamp http://www.winamp.com/ and the shnamp plugin http://www.etree.org/shnamp.html in order to play it with out decoding. Oh wait I am sorry, I forgot you wanted to buy a box set....go for it. No investment in the Dead is a bad investment.
Best studio albums in my opinion - American Beauty and Workingman's Dead There are good live albums - Grateful Dead (aka Skull & Roses or Skull F***, Europe '72, Without a Net, etc.) There are also volumes of live music called Dick's Pick with loads of great stuff. There are also concert tapes taped by Deadheads at shows that you can get if you know the right people. This was one of the great things about the band - they encouraged taping their music. You can go to just about any Dead site and get info on this.
no need to 'buy' anything. almost all of their live material can be found for free at www.archive.org there is a forum there letting you know what software you'll need (all the needed software is available for free). Some of the shows I would recommend: 5/08/77 - Cornell University, New York 6/18/74 - Louisville, Kentucky 10/27/79 - Cape Cod Coliseum 2/15/73 - Madison, Wisconsin 2/18/71 - Capitol Theatre, Portchester, NY 4/14/72 - Tivoli Theatre, Copenhagen jeez, I could go on and on - I've been a fan and collector for 20 years, so private message me if you need any more recommendations.
definitely buy it...i mean whats better to spend extra cash on? it'll last forever and it will make you happy and my favorite album is American Beauty
I do this, because I CAN! LOL!!!!!!!!!! http://www.gdradio.net/listen.asx Click to listen to them! Help support the site!
of course you should get it! i didn't and i did the math the other day, its something like 30 or 40 bucks cheaper to get the boxed set. and some of those albums are near impossible to find, like their first LP and Bear's Choice. and Dick's Picks... ive found all of two (there's like 32 of them now), and they're anywhere from 20 to 30 bucks a piece. but if you can find some of em, dear god buy them... and it is the general consensus that live dead is leaps and bounds better than studio dead. i reccomend going to www.nugs.net or www.gdlive.com for all your grateful downloading needs (that sounded kinda like an advertisement...) and since evryone else did, and i must follow every trend possible, ill mention my favorite album... 'anthem of the sun'.
but I already knew that one. furthernet is better still, for selection. It just isnt as stable to dl. and by the way archive.org does not have all the shows. I got at least 27 shows from a single year(1991) that are not listed on that site.
oh i know that there are shows missing, but for the most part they are of great quality. I'll have to check out furthernet.
