OH NO! All of a sudden I found some kind of waxy substance in one of my roots, then I noticed that it was in more than 1 root! I know it's not wax, I only used wax like twice and I didn't even had dreadlocks at that time (I went natural..) And that's like more than 1 year ago...
I rolled the root around in a paper towel and it looks yellowish, like earwax (eeeew). I doesn't stink though. I doesn't smell at all, well maybe a bit like my scalp in general?
I never put any shit in my hair! All I do is wash it, sometimes twice a week, sometimes twice a month. WHAT COULD IT BE?!
I soaked the dreads in tea tree shampoo and rinsed with very hot water, I dunno if it's gonna do the job.. Heeeeeeeelp!!

if you used rubberbands then sometimes they get sucked into the dread and break down into their natural state. so it might just be some rubber.

It comes out of your head :p If you scratch your scalp you probably have it under your nails.

I agree, it's probably your natural oils that aren't getting brushed down into your hair. It takes a while after using regular commercial shampoos for your scalp to stop overproducing oils. That happens to those of us without dreads, who quit using toxic shampoos, too. But it gets better after a while. It's generally worse if you have hard water because most soaps leave soap scum behind if you have hard water, in which case you'd do better to wash with baking soda every now and then instead. Try rinsing with lemon juice to get the soap or baking soda all the way out of your hair, and only use the soap when absolutely necessary. Plain water or just lemon juice will get your hair suprisingly clean, if you scrub your scalp with your fingers really well.

if you used wax at all it can stay in your hair for a very long time...oh but why were u using wax if you didn't have locks?

but if there was a lot of it...it prolly was something on your scalp, like people are sayin'...natural stuff, it'll go away...just wash yer head real good.

hmm yeah I thought it could be that, natural oils I mean, but it's really a lot! also, you'd think that my scalp got used to less washing and a different shampoo after two years?
so it could be the hard water hmm? hmm. hmmmmm.. who can tell me more about apple cider vinegar rinse btw? could that be an over-all good substitute for soap and shampoo?

I know that if you are around heavy smokers or smoke yourself that builds up in your dreads. Polluntants in the air could also be the cause!! :) I second the plain water and lemon juice method! :)

Ahhh, what I affectionately refer to as head butter.

use the deep cleaning concoction. Also, if you use a nail brush and scrub the hell out of your hair (especially the roots) while using residue-free soap, that helps.

I would also suggest washing more. There's no way in hell I could only wash my hair 2x a month. (I know you said it varies fron 2x/week- 2x/month). I would suggest sticking with the 2x/week

hmm.. I dunno about the washing 2x a week and the nail brush! I'm washing once a week now. I'll definately try the concoction soon, I had some issues with figuring out what baking soda is in Dutch :p
and yeah I think head butter covers it pretty well :)

the nail brush is only if you have a ton of gunk at the roots. Maybe it doesn't work for everyone but it works for me

oh my god no. Maybe you are thinking of a wire brush? Nail brushes are cheap little platic brushes with firm but soft bristles used for cleaning out and around your nails. The bristles are made of thin skinny..plastic probably. Doesn't hurt at all.

I also suggest using Dr Bronner bar soap. I did this yesterday and massaged my scalp and it felt wonderful! Tons of lather, too.
