Now I'll preach walking or biking or public transport or alternative fuel first and foremost, but lord knows thats less than practical.... Most of America owns gas fueled vehicles, and most of America needs to get somewhere.

    To Quote:
Of the top oil producing countries in the world, only one is a democracy with a president who was elected on a platform of using his nation's oil revenue to benefit the poor. The country is Venezuela. The President is Hugo Chavez. Call him "the Anti-Bush." Citgo is a U.S. refining and marketing firm that is a wholly owned subsidiary of Venezuela's state-owned oil company. Money you pay to Citgo goes primarily to Venezuela -- not Saudi Arabia or the Middle East. There are 14,000 Citgo gas stations in the US. (Click here http://www.citgo.com/CITGOLocator/StoreLocator.jsp to find one near you.) By buying your gasoline at Citgo, you are contributing to the billions of dollars that Venezuela's democratic government is using to provide health care, literacy and education, and subsidized food for the majority of Venezuelans.

Instead of using government to help the rich and the corporate, as Bush does, Chavez is using the resources and oil revenue of his government to help the poor in Venezuela. A country with so much oil wealth shouldn't have 60 percent of its people living in poverty, earning less than $2 per day. With a mass movement behind him, Chavez is confronting poverty in Venezuela. That's why large majorities have consistently backed him in democratic elections. And why the Bush administration supported an attempted military coup in 2002 that sought to overthrow Chavez.

    :End Quote

    So... GO CITGO!!!!

It's a noble idea, but, unfortunately, incorrect:

I've recently seen a product at the gas pumps of more liberal communities called bio-diesel, it's basically processed grease from fast food restaurants, and it seems like a win-win situation 'cause the restaurants now have an environmentally friendly way to dispose of the stuff, so they're psyched, and now we're not dependent on the big greedy oil companies, so we're psyched.

I filled up my Jetta TDI on the stuff the last time I drove through Brattleboro, VT, and I was amazed that it had no impact on performance, it just smelled like french fries instead of that toxic odor you normally get from diesel. The only bummer was it was like 3 bucks a gallon, vs 2.50 for conventional diesel. I find that kinda lame, considering the stuff's gotta be cheaper to come by than fossil fuels, but I guess it's just the oil giants' way of keeping us dependent on the non-renewable resources they control. I hope that if enough people buy the stuff, it'll become more main stream, and cheaper to make (and buy) than conventional diesel due to economies of scale.

Another option is hybrid vehicles, but again the costs are higher due to the fact that it's a new technology, and it requires more stuff (batteries, inverters, etc.), plus it could present other problems due to the issue of disposal of the batteries.

commercial biodiesel is very rarely made from used oil. much of it is only 20% biodiesel. be careful what you buy. i advocate using waste oil, and using need oil for biodiesel is not my bag at all and dont support it...
biodiesel is not a solution either, just something some of us use

Thanks for the info, Raven, I'll need to look into it a little more, it definitely makes me skeptical when a "big oil" company is selling the stuff, kinda makes you wonder if it's just a ploy to appeal to the environmentalists while gauging us at the same time.

I dig your website, BTW, gotta read it more thoroughly when I get a chance. I've heard of a number of folks doing the same thing, I could probably convert my VW TDI pretty easily. Furthermore, I'll bet the oil companies don't want us to know about it, 'might threaten the control they have over us.
