i couldnt find a more general health section so i decided to ask here.

has anyone had there tonsilles out? i might have to get them out soon since they the swelling hasnt gone down in like a month. i was curious what happens before the procedure and after, healing time? some people say a couple days, some say 2 weeks.

i smoke atleast once a day so its going to be tough just stopping all of a sudden, but it will be a nice break, and i'll get grilled after lol

    any help is appreciated, thanks

I had mine taken out when I was young, and it was AWFUL. I know that most cases weren't as bad as mine, but I would never want to go through that again.

My throat hurt in a way it had never hurt for over a month. I couldn't eat, and I lost a lot of weight. I was probably 10 at the time, and I suppose it's not great thing to lose that kind of weight. I puked blood several times. It was real misery.

I would highly advise NOT to smoke. I know if I were to, it would rip the scar and I would again puke blood.

thats encouraging lol but thank you for the reply. i was reading about the whole bloody vomit thing, i think its a rare occurence, but still might happen once or twice in most cases.

do you remember what, if any, medication you recieved. i assume pain killers are givin. were you in the hospital for a long time? i believe the procedure only take an hour or so but they might keep you over night for observation...

    thanks for the help!

Didn't mean to scare you :) When my sister had her's done, she was only in pain for a couple days. I don't recall the meds I got, but I know I didn't have to stay in the hospital. I actually ended up having two procedures during my stay, and I was on my way home after a couple of hours. I wouldn't worry about it; it's a rather uncomplicated surgery, at least so I've heard. I've actually heard that a lot of times it's a rather unnecessary procedure, but I haven't actually looked into it or anything. Good luck!!!

    thanks!!

ha no worries on the scare, im pretty calm about it, i cant see dying from the procedure so i dont have to worry about that (i hope!). a couple hours? thats pretty quick, i hope thats the way mine goes. it seems pretty unnecessary in most cases, but mine swelled about about a month ago and havnt gone down since so i figure its inevitable to just take them out..

I had mine removed when I was 10, God that 48 years ago.
I had a rough time that year, they always seemed infected. They got so swollen I was having a hard time breathing I remember my folks taking me to the doctors and he lanced them to get the swelling down.
At ten I fell for the old line "and you get all the ice cream you want".
After the surgery they'll want to drink alot of fluids, I found apple juice went down pretty easy, stay away from O.J. it burns like hell on the raw tissue.
    Good luck.........Alaskan
