nah, just backcomb it. and i can speak form first hand experience from both rubberbands and wax. bad bad bad. just backcomb and leave it. they'll unravel a bit after the first wash and if you have to rebackcomb someof them it's fine but just mainly leave it alone. good luck, man

Should I not wash my hair, or get it wet for the first week or so? And by re-backcoming it, can I do that myself?

if you want dreads to look like dreads instantly.. well not instantly it still takes hours, then back comb them into stripes, this is what i did, then just left it that way to do its own thing. some unravelled, but then knotted up again how they wanted to. remeber this is a natural type of living, because you could also just leave your hair free and it would lock up. With dreadlocks you dont really need to wash as often, i waited about a month, but it was summer and i was swimming, now i just wash my hair when its itchy, or calls to me. dont stress to much about re-backcombing, and your hair having to look nice, because its not giong to look like you pictured it. dreadlocks are a beautiful wonderful experience and i hope you enjoy it :)

Thanks for all the great advice, but I still have one fairly important question:

Should I straighten my hair before I backcomb, or keep it the way it is?

dreadlocking is a process of knotting your hair. the knottier it starts off, the faster they'll form. straightening and brushing your hair is counter-productive to what you are trying to do. the less you do to your hair, the better!

if youre going to backcomb it though, ive found its better to start with brushed, not tangled hair. its a lot easier (and less painfull) to separate into clumps and backcomb. if youre letting it go naturally, then by all means dont do a thing :)
    anyway, dont straighten it.

Well, my wisdom teeth being removed has postponed my dreads for a little bit, but I have a few more questions:

When I sleep should I just leave them as is for the first so many weeks or wear something?

I hear all about ripping, etc..., but what exactly will I need to do to maintain them, and will I have to do anything special for the begenning stages?

you don't HAVE to wear soemthign to bed but a wool hat works well. and you only need to worry about ripping if oyu don't want congos.(this is when two or more dreads knot up together to make a bigger one) and what you do is just rip the dreads apart from each other. and no, you won't really have to do anything in the beginning. i suppose you could palmroll if you wanted, though...

How exactly do I palm roll? Also, I have a friend who backcombed her hair and she has a backcombing comb that she still uses. Should I get one? Oh and since I won't be using wax what can I do to keep my hair from getting to dry?

Probably will end up just going the neglect route anyways....seems a bit more appealing to me personally.
