hi woodenfrog, yeh weve had a good crop this year and planted more than last year, ive just made some pesto with some fresh garlic in which is really good, if you or anyone else grows basil too ill be pl;eased to post the recipie (which is vegan). In fact all our alliums have done well thhis year with a bumper crop of shalotts. The main trouble ive had is with oinions going to seed, which i believe was either caused by planting out in a cold snap or not firming in enough as we're on sand. anyway they wont keep so well but all in all its ok. ill sow spring oinions too in the aultum to help fill any possible gap too. personally ill sow carrots after the oinions are up. Also im going to try sowing some in a frame or green house in mid autumn to over winter. best wishes with glutts of cabbage cauli calabrese romanescue .. for that matter does anyone else grow the wonderfull italian brassica romanescue? if ya dont sow em ya wont grow em! thats my saying.
cool another allium fan.ya all my garlic is cureing now.3400 bulbs alltogether,8 diffrent verietys.our garlic fest is in september should be a good one.my crop is getting bigger and bigger wich is needed as i sell to local resturants and markets.and i keep on getin more costomers.i havent tried schallots yet but would like to this year,do you have anny tips on that for me.? yes we grow allot of basil and would like that recipe of yours.thanks for the help.have a great day,sunshine to you frog
wow woodenfrog thasts a hefty crop, i hope you are making good money, are you producing only garlic, or do you comercially grow other crops? Sorry ive not got back to you sooner anyway. The recipie for the pesto follows; liquidise or pestle and morter 2oz of washed dried and de-stalked basil leaves, with 1 clove of garlic, a pinch of salt, some squeased lemon juice, and a handfull of pine nuts. When its thick start adding the olive oil a little at a time, when enough has been added it should have a thick concisdtancy. Jar and cover with more oil. Keep it in the fridge or cool, use within next 4 or so days as taste deteroriates. Enjoy! I hope you have time to make it. About shalotts, i sow in febuary so the tops show 6'' apart in rows 8-10'' apart hoe them regular and thats about it. a good no hastle crop. best wishes.
hay thanks for the resipie ill try it this weekend.ya i make decent $ with garlic.sell it to stores and at farmers markits and at our garlic fest.we allso sell fresh herbs,but garlic is the main one.now that im interested in shallots will probly sell those allso.my beds are getin bigger and bigger and soon will be applying for an ag grant to get more land.hopefully in a couple years my wife and i will be able to suport our selves with just garlic sails.thanks agian for the info frog
I absolutely have! I grew garlic indoors this winter too, which worked AMAZING. In my house, garlic isn't a seasoning, it's a sidedish...

wf,,, this is the first year we are gonna attempt garlic,,, of course we ordered it from a seed place n they sposed to send it at proper time,,, it just came the other day,,,, isn't it too late too plant now .... i know i gotta read more on it n all but from what i have read n heard ya either do real early spring or fall planting,,, n ya'll are harvesting already ,,, so do i plant the stuff nhope for the best orcall it another dumb blunder?

kewl thankyou much.... i will do that this fall,,, but in the mean time i have a shitpot pile of garlic,,,,, any suggestion if i were to attempt to plant it now just to attempt not lettin them go completely to waste?Keep in mind our winters here atleast the last three i been here are not a winter,,, hell this year my annuals never were completely killed and are regrowing,,,,,
ya,i spose you could put them in now (early spring) and dig them in the fall.the bulbs wont be as big and the taste is affected a bit but its better then letting the rot.you could allways try canning some allso (not nearly as good as fresh garlic). but ya put some in the dirt and see wat happens they will be just alittle behind scedule,my plants are 4-6 inches allready,good luck and have fun.maybee take some notes and studdy a bit for the next crop.your gonna love growing garlic its an amazeing plant to watch develop.sunshine frog
heres some info i just coppyed off my site In northern Iowa, garlic is usually planted in early to mid-October. The idea is to allow the root system to start developing before the ground freezes, but not so much that the bulb shoots a sprout above ground. With mild winters, the sprouts may appear above ground in late November, early December. Don't worry, these will still make it. Unless given a proper cold treatment prior to planting, garlic planted in the spring will often produce weak shoots and poorly developed bulbs. Lack of scape development in hardneck garlic and bulbing in all garlic is usually due to an inadequate cold treatment.
so ya i spose you could give them a cold treatment befor you plant them.Ive never done this as i plant in the fall so i dont know the propper way to give them a cold treatment.good luck and keep us posted on your garlic project. GARLIC IS LIFE frog
lookin more at garlic stuff just found an article sayin to throw the bulbs in the fridge for a few days to get them to sprout when planting late,,,, will try it,,, most they will do is die..
