I'm so ticked off right now. I live in Florida and last year we had some hurricanes come through are area for first time in 40 years. Now several hysterical idiots in my nice, shady neighborhood are cutting down everything in sight! Most of these people have moved to Florida in the last 2 or 3 years and have no concept of the rarity of hurricanes or the fact that simply having an experienced tree trimmer cut some branches could be more beneficial than taking out every single tree on your property. To cut down healthy trees for no reason other than your own ignorance is basically murder. Thanks for letting me speak my piece.

Funny to think to, the trees (big health ones) would block alot of the deberis that shreds houses, and well now they have no sheild.... hoorah for foresight... sigh....

    "basically murder"

This statement devalues human life. Murdering another human being is just about the worst thing a human can do. Unnecessary killing of animals and plants is also reprehensible, but to say that it's murder is infantile and cheapens the whole argument.

Frequently the behavior of human beings devalues human life.Trees don't go around murdering each other for kicks,an unfortunate number of humans do. It's not up to us to decide what type of life is more valuable.

yeah im exactly the same way. it kills me when i see trees being cut down, or i see people wasting paper for likr paper airplanes or something. it really makes me mad. if people recycled more we wouldnt have to cut down so many trees in the first place, and for people to cut down trees just to do it is insane.

I remember this old guy that came into the store I was workin' at a couple years ago, totin' his oxygen bottle and speaking with a low, hoarse, scratchy, labored voice. He was whinin' 'bout how trees'd been cut down nearby for a new bypass. "Did you see all those beautiful trees they cut down? What a shame," he moaned. What a moron.

There are reasons to cut down trees. It's not really safe to have large trees loomin' near a house, and some people burn wood to heat their houses. I don't like the fact that many homes and buildings are wood-framed, but that's just because I don't think wood should be used structurally. It's impecise, burns, rots, etc. But, nicer woods are fine for things like cabinetry. Wood has its uses, and sometimes it's just desirable to have an area cleared. The wood could still be put to use...

Just to add to what everyone else is saying: AMEN.

Terrapin, I lived through a hurricane in the northeast (pfft, barely a windstorm), and I saw how idiotic people get. Everyone went crazy the next day, and any tree that was so much as 5 degrees tilted was getting the chainsaw. So I went out there with a bunch of ropes and spent the entire morning hoisting all the trees back upright so my landlord wouldn't have any excuse to start hacking. It was one helluva workout, but by the time the landlord showed up, there was nothing for him to do. :D Score for our team!

And yah, star_gurl, recycling makes a huge difference. I buy all my reams of paper from some place out in Nebraska that uses 100% post consumer fibers. So... uhm... I get to make all the paper airplanes I want ;)

I believe wood is archaic, just like quill pens. Ask any architect: masonry & aluminum-framed houses are superior. Ask any sailor: fiberglass boats are more seaworthy. Ask any guitarist (who's actually played one): carbon-fiber guitars have the best tone. Violins and cellos too. So, tree-hugger or not, it's in everyone's best interest to stay informed of the alternatives.

buid with brick- but dont cut down all your trees. Theres 2 reasons (probably more)

Selfish : Trees lower air conditioning bills in the south. (Shade)
Selfless : Trees are our friends and an important part of the ecosystem.

Thanks, though hurricanes aren't much of a (direct) threat where I am. I am living in an old wood-framed house at the moment, but a block and steel one is in the process of bein' built right now 'bout 20' away from me that I'll soon be inhabiting.

I hate it when people cut down trees. Especially for stupid reasons, like they are growing near power lines and they are like 50 years old. Move the fucking powerlines.

Masonry and brick are outdated (ironicly) by cob or earthship construction. As far as tree cutting, selective cutting serves a purpouse, but it needs to be real selective cut, not let's plow down everything in sight and call it selective cutting. Big dif.

edt: clearcut is the fuggin devil. You see clearcut, think action and react. Stop those sumsabitches. It's like dropping a barrel of mace in your living room.

    Thanks element.

Yeah I want to buy the poster but I am poor.

We had a Mimosa tree growing in our front yard and it was close to a powerline, but it wasnt touching it, they cut it down without our consent. It pissed my dad off so bad, they paid us 300 bucks for it. Neat thing about mimosa's is when you cut them down they grow back:p

Their is one in a field next to me which was once where I lived. Me, and my older sisters who have families of their own would climb that tree when we were little, they cut it down, and when it grew back they soaked it with poisons, man that made me so mad, these idiots that work for the powercompany around here love to cut down trees. We have about a 60 year old oak tree in our front yard that is huuuuuuuuuuuge, and they asked my dad if they could cut it down, and its no where near a power line, and he told them off so they left. They tried to cut down another mimosa but we ran out there and stopped them. They are fucking insane hicks.

    wise words

i'm yet to cool my house off with trees and shade, and not really sure how to go about all the thing having never done it before but its definatley been crossing my mind recently and on the to do list with all the air coniditoning schmo and oil my mom loves to burn. not sure what kind of angle would be best to keep the house cool and aligned with all of the differently placed windows and not totally blot the windows out, seems theres a lot to consider. it makes perfect sense though, in the winter they lose their leaves and the sunlight is allowed back into your house for a little natural heat. i think you can also cool your house off with lots of plants since they absorb some heat somehow, maybe certain plants work better than others, anyone know anything about any of this?

hell i still dont even have trees between the sidewalk and street to absorb all the toxicity people spew driving by my house, mom included, would make me feel a little more responsible, cleans way more air than a little patch of grass. been waiting for a rain to rescue and yank some taller ones that would probably die otherwise up from a forest that look like theyd fit nicely there. dont understand why youd pay 50 bucks for a slightly larger one atta nursery when they grow freely all over the place and you can just raise them with a little time and effort, but its much more rewarding. plus i want the people who live here after me(assuming my house isnt nuked or bombed or anything) to enjoy and benefit from something sustainable and just more natural and good vibed i am going to create, planting other trees and a little grove and rock garden as opposed to a uniform bland boring square yard. nature seems to work wonders with people, like having a shady house and street compared to a blazing hot unatural one filled with cars, much more peaceful and easy to flow in, bet there is really something to that idea...

While I have no hurricanes or the like, we have subdivisions. Even worse. My city is growing like a wild fire and they're clear cutting forests to plop down subdivions. What sucks abuot that is all the poor 'ghetto' neighbourhoods throughout the area are being shut down and the residents are forced to move to a more innercity location. We've all seen what that can do.

    We suck.
