Is the HF software automatically practicing some kind of censorship here?

The only way to follow the link is to click "quote" under her message, then copy and paste the link into the top of your web browser. The page does exist.

The David Brooks editorial makes some valid points about political correctness, but I don't think those sins have become widespread, beyond the most liberal universities. Among the folks who hate Fox News (myself included), most of us don't wish for something violent to happen to their studios or employees. That's a line we don't cross.

Brooks comes across as a bit of a snob himself, while criticizing others for doing the same thing.

Weird, it's just the NY Times. Sorry if it didn't work for some. It worked for me the other night when I posted it, but now it doesn't.

Brooks is a bit of a douche who sometimes makes good points. You summed him up pretty well :).

Agreed. Well, maybe Piers Morgan and that guy that does the red-eye show. [IMG] ...(kidding)

Those few examples of supposed 'censorship' Brooks gave,
"The University of Illinois fired a professor who taught the Roman Catholic view on homosexuality. The University of Kansas suspended a professor for writing a harsh tweet against the N.R.A. Vanderbilt University derecognized a Christian group that insisted that it be led by Christians."

Those are the kind of things the courts are for. The constitution is explicit on free speech and if it's violated then we file suit and leave the matter to a competent judge. Thats how our system works. That is, if you believe we have competent judges in this country, but thats another subject.

In my old shop we had lots of Arabic-Islamic co-workers. They seemed very bummed out and subdued after the Boston Bombing. they probably immigrated to get away from all the crap.

Remembering the Palestinian coffee shop owner on the morning of 911; the look of fear and unhappiness in his face; his wife, under a shawl, huddled with the small children, pulled from school, in the back of the coffee shop. Ordinary Islamics are the main victims of this insanity.

We need to keep reminding ourselves that fundamentalist Muslims kill more moderate Muslims than Christians. We think this is mostly about us, but it's mostly a dispute within Islam.

Yes, HipChris has it right. And this Jihadism is every bit as dangerous to us all as FACISM was in the 1940s and earlier. We need to fight back. Too bad we have an enemy sympathizer for president.

French media says it was the largest peaceful demonstration ever in Paris.

By the way, four hostages and a policewoman bring the week's death toll to 17, not counting 3 criminals shot by police.

Steve Emerson has publicly apologized for his idiotic statements. The Prime Minister of England called him a "complete idiot". Birmingham is approx. 20% Muslim.

If the bully gets decapitated, or his family gunned down with AK47s, then the bully is no longer the bad guy.

Two wrongs don't make a right. We can mourn the tragedy of muslim extremist violence, and we can mourn the tragedy of the circumstances which led to its existence and attacks on the west (colonialism, war on terror, etc)

A fucking men, Karen! Of course when something like this happens it is understandable and very valid to look at ourselves and our situation and consider how to react to/process this atrocity, but what a lot of us seem to forget is that we are not even the primary victims of extremist muslims so far!! Yes, 12 people that made ultimate use of our freedom of speech died and this is very bad. There are also normal muslim people (among other local minorities) getting killed and raped every day in areas where extremists have more power.
Besides, a lot of normal muslims in western countries that are just as shocked by the attack on Charlie Hebdo as any of us are getting a hard time because we can not direct our anger properly. So, when we regard all these post terrorist attack cartoons that have been made (and there have been made a lot! :)) these are the strongest and best ones imo:

Got to include these 2 because a lot of this Je suis Charlie support seems just hypocritical (and relative, especially from leaders who protested sarcastic cartoons in the past!) and of course the cartoonists at Charlie do not forget to make fun of that too! :D

Ok, couldn't find the one by Hebdo that criticizes the world leaders supporting them but came across this pic carrying out the same message. Thought I share this instead then (if one happens to see the cartoon share it please!):

Here's an article that points out some of the hypocrisy ;): https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/articles/europe/16347-leaders-from-countries-that-persecute-journalists-march-for-freedom-of-speech-in-paris

Yeah, kind of a dubious feeling if we never felt that urge before but I think the key in making a picture of Mohammed or a critical joke about islam is that it either has a good message or just is really funny (or both :)). An unfunny, meaningless mock is just an insult. Jihadi terrorists are asking to get their prophet insulted but normal muslims aren't. So when we do act upon our urge to make use of this freedom of speech that we have, we ideally should not do it mindless just because we can, by insulting other people's most holy person in the most offensive way without anything being funny or righteous about it. Yes, we can, and yes, we should be and are able to, but hey, is that really a good reason on itself?
That's why imho this pic is brilliant (partly because it is also a take on the classic french original of course, but especially because it mocks the disallowance of portraying the prophet without actually portraying or insulting the prophet :D):

    and this isn't:

The thing is though that it seems to be OK to have jokes which could be taken as insults aimed at the primary religious figures of other religions and you don't get people murdered because of it. Even by extreme adherents of such beliefs.

There have been films for example that were considered blasphemous by Christians such as Life of Brian, or The Last Temptation, as well as many other jokes being directed at Christianity and Jesus.

The Lego pic is only partly a joke - because it hits on a truth about the Prophet. And maybe the status of women under Islam.
