    Hey guys,
Been looking around these forums a little bit recently, which helped me make the desicion to get dreadlocks.
Iv wanted them for years now, but I wasnt able to have them at my school, so I waited until i finished last year. I was a bit hesitant though just as I wasnt sure how they turned out, and also I just liked to play with my hair a lot haha.
But anyway, I finally decided I would so I went to an african hair place near me and spent a few hours getting them done.
I would have like ot grow them naturally, but unfortunatley my workplace wouldnt have allowed me to as they'd be quite messy, so I got them done in one go. It's been a bit under a month nowand I think they're coming a long not too bad. I don't use wax, they put wax in when they first did them, and havnt had any since.

here's a pic of my hair before:

Then the day I got them done, can see a fair bit of wax on them then
    [IMG]

Then this photos were taken a bit under 2 weeks old
    [IMG]

Then headbanging at just under 3 weeks
    [IMG]

I will try and get one of them now where you can see them properly. I'll also try to keep them coming as time goes on.

So any tips would be great, and no doubt i'll have a few questions a long the way.

Liek first of all, i've been palm rolling them a lot, although I just read a threa don here where they were told to not palm roll them at first to help them knot up?
Should I stop? Or atleast do it lessf requently?

    Thanks aye
    Cameron

From what I can see they look alright :),we've seen some real messes on here that have been 'professionally' done!

I think you should quit palmrolling as it does'nt really help do anything, just leave them alone which is very hard but trust me they will sort themselves out.

As they grow they might knot into each other at the root so gently pull them apart otherwise they will just congo and you'll end up with fatter dreads.

Keep them nice and clean as clean hair dreads faster, the greasier it is the harder it is for your hair to knot.Lots of ppl on here suggest residue free shampoos or bicarb soda to wash them.

Cant think of owt else.....good luck with ya dreadies! :)

    Cheers for the reply.
Yeah I have bought myself some of the dreadheadhq shampoo for the moment, at some point i'll try use some methods like that aswell.
And as to the palm rolling, yeah I'll try not too. I can notice some of the dreads which dont get paml rolled as often feel much tighter than those that get it most regularly stopping should be a good idea.

    1) i vote more shirtless pics :D

    2) they look pretty good for a salon job. just keep 'em clean and let them do their own thing and they'll be awesome in no time at all. dreadlocks don't need nearly as much maintenance as people seem to think they do.

Hahaha, apart from when I'm at uni, or work, or most times the shops, I've rarley got a shirt on you can expect more lol.

It's funny, the change of my perception on dreadlock maintainance since iv first wanted them. At first I had the same assumptions as most people that they didnt get washed, and were dirty and all that. Then as I was considering actually growing them I got the assumption that they were even more maintainance than normal, un-dreaded hair, especially at first. But now im starting to realise once again that there isn't as much to it, as you just mentioned.

Yeah no worries. the only people who seem to know what to do with dreadlocks are people who have actually had them... and even then there are some people who are all 'no washing required!' or 'wax them constantly!'. i think every group has its weirdos/idiots :D

keep us posted on their progress :)

i mean you've already paid someone to put them in and they already have wax in them... so you got most of the serious fuck ups out of the way already.

just dont do much else at all except wash them and youll be fine.

also, dont blunt the tips... thatd be mega-gay

Another quick little question, how often should they be washed at this stage?
So far I've just been washing them every week, or a little bit under. Would 2 times a week at this stage be a bit much?

    Thanks aye

wash them as often as you feel necessary. only key thing is to make sure they get COMPLETELY dry in between washings- at the beginning it won't take long at all before they're dry and then you'll start noticing that it takes hours to days for the suckers to get totally dry.

i wash my hairs about every 3 days and i've had dreads for >7 months, but some people wash them once a week, or maybe every other day, etc. differs for everybody. its personal preference for me to wash that often :)

From Day One I Have Either Washed Mine Every Day, Or At The Least,

    Every Second Day...

Only Clean, Non Oily Hair Will Lock Up Quickly..:).

What I Do Is To Take A 1-25 litre Coke Bottle, Drill A 4mm Hole In The Cap

Put About One Tablespoon Of Baking Soda In The Bottle Using A Small

Plastic Funnel, Then Fill To About Three Quarters With Warm Water,

Hold Finger Over Hole, And Gently Shake, Removing Finger Occasionally

To Release The Pressure From The Gas's The Baking Soda Creates.

Then In The Shower I Lightly Dampen My Hair, Invert The Bottle

All The Time Squeezing The Locks I'm Pouring It On.

Then I Brush My Teeth, Shave, Soap Up My "Boi Bits":p, And All The Other

Stuff You Normally Do In The Shower.

THEN.....I Rinse..Rinse..Rinse..Whilst Squeezing Each Dread, And, Just

To Be Sure, I Rinse Again...:D.

    Hope This Helps..:).

    Cheers Glen.

Very easy, that's great information! Thanks for that mate ;)
I think i'm going try this next time, see if I notice much difference to the dreadheadhq shampoo, and if so then once I finish the bottle that might be the way to go. Much cheaper :D

And to any of those that use the dreadheadhq shampoo, is it suppose to lather much? As I can't seem to get it to lather hardly at all, which i'm not sure if that's normal or not.

    Cheers

looks good my friend. I've been locked for 6 years now. My only real advice is to stay in your hair. the more you play around with it, palm rolling and such, the cleaner they will be, the neater they will look, and the sooner you will notice if something is going wrong.

You actually stared the same way I did =D getting them done by someone else is a great idea in my opinion. It gives you an outlet for learning as well as someone who can tell you how to deal with locks. The wax thing is hit or miss I guess, I did it my girlfriend didn't no problems either way.

As for cleaning. Once you are "locked" probably about 2 months in you can, in theory, wash your hair whenever you want. My girlfriend, who has been locked for 2-3 years now, and I was our hair once a week. But you will know if they are getting to soft or two frayed. Avoid shampoos with lots of product or scent additives. most of that stuff will try an detangle your hair. may i suggest mint therapeutic hair washes, the mint will stimulate hair growth and keep your scalp clean.

    Ez man.

    SSSSHHHHHHHIIIIIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!

Argh fuck, well my head has been a bit itchy, and I assumed it was just dry scalp or from not washing my hair as often as I use to. Although just then I could feel slight movement on my scalp, to which I managed to pull out a fucking head louce!
I was hoping it was jsut a small bug that had flown into my hair since they're flying around my computer screen for the light, but I got my macro lens and extension tubes to have a close up look and this is what I managed to take a photo of...

    http://s274.photobucket.com/albums/jj272/cam_foodooism_rocker36/?action=view&current=IMG_1959.jpg

    Deffinatley a louce :( :( :(

So now im freakin out n not sure what to do??? I'll have a look through the boards to see if I can find any previous threads on it, and look on the net, but would very much appreciate some advice from people!! Please!

    Thanks :(

Thanks for the quick reply mate. We had a bottle of one some chemicals as my younger brother had them recently (who I most likley would have gotten them from). I hadnt had lice in years, despite him getting them quite often, but my luck changed at the worst particular time now that I decided to dread my hair :/

    Hopefully this stuff might help.

I can't imagine chemicals like these to be good for the dreads, does anyone know if they are actually bad for them though?
    Thanks
