Has anyone on here ever been fined/sued, or known anyone whose been fined/sued, or known anyone whose known anyone whose been fined/sued.

    Idk.. After reading this article

    http://m.boingboing.net/2010/03/31/20000-us-bittorrent.html

My...*ahem*....friend.., got majorly paranoid, deleted shit off his computer, (though if they're already onto him it wouldn't help) and swore off it..

    thoughts?

naw, ive never been fined/sued... nor has anybody i know that using file sharing a lot.

one of my friends did say this older guy we knew as an accquintance got busted for pirating shit.. but he got busted because he was selling pirate games, movies and such

edit: come to think of it though, i have heard that a lot of people are getting messages from their ISP's about downloading when they become alerted about suspiciously high usage of internet capacity.. i think its the really high upload speeds that really send up a red flag that it is filesharing... not just streaming and shit.

so if you limit your max upload speed on your torrent client you should be good.. its good to give back some though so just make the upload rate something reasonable.

idk if any of this is legit im just stoned thinkin bout it sorry

Steal steal steal. They steal from you, you steal from them.
Just read an article on how not to get caught. Preferably from something you would consider a reputable source, so you don't get tricked into giving yourself away

The kid who lived next door to me when I lived in the dorms got some kind of warning message about downloading music, but I don't think he ever was fined.

I love living in the Land of Make Believe Laws.. you people are crazy enough to pay fines to these asshole that have been ripping us off since their genesis, then you might as well go to jail and be ass raped for it to...

People in general are to cowardly to stand up to anything.. like Life is all that anyways...

i know someone that got fined...don't know what ended up from all of it. pretty sure it was cause he had a shiiiiitt ton of media and programs though.

i don't really torrent much anymore. most of the music i listen to is mixtapes which are free and i know a few loopholes for songs id normally pay money for.

though if i do torrent, i usually get it on my ipod then delete it off the computer

As long as your not stupid.. and you use a decent bit of protection.. your chances of getting caught file sharing are rare... the number 1 red flag is upload rate.. if all of a sudden they notice you are uploading a lot.. they will think something is up.. download rate doesn't tell them shit with streamed media... someone could be using 5gb of data a month from using youtube and hulu while another could have downloaded illegal music

But they can just tell from rate?

For some reason I always thought there was a way for them to find the ip addresses of everyone who downloads a certin torrent..

certain companies get paid to scan ip ranges for possible illegal internet connectivity... usually these companies are also a seeder in this downloads and scan all the people that are connected to it... but overall.. its mostly useless scans... but with a properly setup firewall and ip blocking software.. threat is minimal if you are not seeding... also... most of the cases that involved illegal filesharing were also crappy mainstream songs that are ran by big corporation and have the money to make an example out of someone every now and then
