I personally have to look past Flea, arguablly the greatest bass player of all time and say Tim Cummerford (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave) is my favorite modern bassist.
He comes up with some amazing riffs and has some unbelievable skill, and they way he works off Tommy Morello is just pure genius.

I'd love to hear your guys thoughts on modern bassists and your favorites and why.

I agree with the OP. Flea and Tim are great. Personally I like Justin Chansler (sp) from Tool, but thats prolly cause I love Tool.

Have you looked into Tony Levin?

Smokin riffs, beyond explanation. Perhaps THE best bassist noone has ever heard of imho.

    Les Claypool = overhypE

Hes a one trick pony with faulty timing - neat to listen to a couple times but hardly much more than a Mojo Nixon on bass. Was good to hear for one or two albums in the 1990s, but I cant say I see him becoming better with age. At least it gave bass player magazines something to put on the cover other than geddy lee!

Its just my opinion - so dont get all bent outta shape about it.... I just prefer my bassists with a little more creativity and a little less commercial recognition. Les is fine if thats all you are looking for in a bassist - I just dont understand the Claypool bandwagon thing when there are SO many great bass players out there.

You know what I hate... is when people say "such and such a bass player is soo good... he plays like a guitarist."
First of a bass IS a guitar and second. I don't want a bass player who plays like a standard guitarist. I want one that has groove and knows how to walk the strings. It takes alot of skill to get the perfect sound out of a bass with your fingers.

To avoid an ear-bashing, I think it's fine if you wanna play bass with a pick but imo the range of sounds you can get out of a bass with your fingers is what bass is all about... I've gone on a tangent havn't I?

Flea is so sick with it. he prefected the slap/pop bass style. his fills and improvs are insane. mos def the best around these days.

i've never really gotten into RHCP so i don't know about Flea. but i always thought Eric Avery (Jane's Addiction) was a great more modern bass player. the bass lines he played on most of their songs were awesome. way more interesting than just chugging on chord roots.

hmm maybe we can say John Myung with his successful technique (btw, i know he is not a rock n roll bass player but i just wanted to assess him with his own style). and i need to say that, in spite of his good technique, i don't believe that he is playing with full of spirit, which is one of most important things in music...

and the other choice, yeah that's absolutely Flea, he is amazing! i believe that he is playing his instrument with his soul, and he feels the music...:)
