I voted PHISH. because they are my band. but i love the grateful dead, but sadly they are of a time i can only dream about....
i really like string cheese too but in comparison to the dead...well there isn't one in my opinion. I also think widespread panic is pretty amazing
Phish, only because I am pathetic and don't know the other bands I'd vote Grateful Dead as my number two fave jam band... but alas, i am not a flower child and do not know their music that well
www.assemblyofdust.com www.ekoostik.com AOD is without a doubt my favorite band to see live today. I actually saw members of hookah play with Stringcheese in Amsterdam during the spring of 2003. Both bands are somewhat local - AOD to the northeast, Hookah to the midwest. I'm pretty certain with the right management, AOD could grow to a national act on par with moe. or stringcheese in popularity, but they're pretty content keeping things small and manageable. To be honest, I'm happy they aren't big like moe., umphreys, sci, panic etc. I really have no desire to see music in venues larger than a 1000 people or so anymore unless its outdoors at a festival. Give me a nice club with a reasonably priced bar anyday over a stadium or large theatre.
Have you ever seen Panic Live? They rock a live show man. I saw them once in a small theatre, and was drunk and dosed out of my mind. When they played "Space Wrangler" I was just jumping up and down, it felt liek I was floating. But unfortunatley I din't get a chance to see them when Mike Houser was alive. I saw them in 2005. Have you ever seen them with their original lineup?
Mike Houser was what made panic for me. once he was gone, it only seemed to be a relic of what i once loved.
all of my Panic shows were with Mikey. I have not liked what i've herad since, even running through the tape versus live filter in my head. Something is definitely missing. Same for Govt Mule post Allen. IF you really are picking your faves off that list, get out and see more! Garaj Mahal, AOD, Animal Liberation Orchestrta, SKB (and related projects) the list is long. Go find the local scene and get in now, that's how they survive until they are a minor phenom on the national level. If it weren't for ski towns, none of you would know about SCI or Yonder, or LoS, because the odd ski town circuit brought enough people who rant and rave into contact with these bands. Be in the first seats of the next bus.
I'm gonna duck underneath the table here because I actually enjoy Panic more these days with George than I did with Mikey. I have the upmost respect for Mikey and truly appreciate the unique style he brought to the music. I saw them about five times with Mikey and have seen them about the same sense with George and the music does more for me now than it did then. George just seems to make it more electrifying. I'm not saying that this is necessarily better, I just get more out of the live experiences I've seen with George than I did with Mikey.
dhs, I'm an old folkie. Grew up on festies, Smithsonian reel-to reels and John Denver 8-tracks. Mikey was the darker, swampier vibe and that I liked mainly from Panic. Bands change and evolve. Some keep the old fans, some swap out for new, but it is all a conscious energy moving through music. Thinking about this a lot since I saw Zero last night (chance in a million and I got it) but without Bobby Vega. I came to Zero when Bobby was THE monster player on the scene. Like him personally, too. Never really figured out the National Geographic moment in Fayetteville, Ark. (he was talking about a T-shirt he liked, he collected Paul's work, and suddenly was doing this 1950s oooga wooga schtick for about three paragraphs. Weird dude.) but Bobby is a gentleman of high caliber and a bad ass bassist. I guess it depends on who you resonate with in a band as well as member chemistry. I like Robyn Sylvester in Rat Dog just fine and tho I like Wasserman's playing, he never really made the Doggie for me.
yeah, panic shows definately ROCK!!! they're just sooooo intense for me! unfortunately, not so intense now that houser's gone..some of the quinessential jams that are just supposed to sound a certain way, such as "Space Wrangler" and "Traveling Light"...even "Hatfield" just don't sound the same...as someone said it best 'Mikey just flowed like a stream of conciousness'..george just doesn't do that for me...but, to answer the question, my favorite is Panic (obviously...even though it wasn't up there
I remeber my first spread show. I was like who is that guy sittin' on his amp with music just pourin' out of him and then man that old guy has been playing drums all night LOL
Definetly the Grateful Dead, I'm just getting into the string cheese incident and they blow my mind! what an excellent band!
The're not the best at what they do the're the one on that do what they do. -Bill Graham My vote definatly and always will go to the Grateful Dead
