I keep meaning to ask about this because I'm surprised I've never seen it mentioned in connection with dread washing. Here's the website: http://www.faithinnature.co.uk/Hair-Care/C/2 This is what I used before getting dreads...although you can't get it over here, my mum would post me some. I was a bit gutted at having to give up using their shampoos as I really like them. But since realising that you don't actually have to wash dreads in a residue-free shampoo (Dr. Bronner's isn't strictly-speaking residue-free... and then there's WorldPeace with her amazing timeline of dreads washed in any old shampoo..) I've been wondering about going back to the Faith In Nature shampoo. I love Dr. Bronner's as my face wash and will continue using it, but don't think it's soooo worth shouting about as a shampoo. So, whaddya'll reckon, huh? Here's what they say about SLES etc: http://www.faithinnature.co.uk/Faith-in-Nature/Natural-Ingredients-Issues
i agree with you amy, i LOVED dr. bronner's the first couple times i used it, but it's novelty is already starting to wear off... poo! actually, in the beginning i was using just a straight, salon brand shampoo called hempz, and it left my hair really really clean, and i didn't experience any buildup whatsoever... it's been about 3 weeks with the dr. bronner's and already i think i'm having problems with it....
Oh yeh you were saying something in one of the other threads...hmmm. I really like that Dr. Bronner's is so "good", ethically etc...but yeh...Gonna have my dreads for a long time and I'd like the washing experience to be a bit more satisfying. I'll probably end up using sodium bicarbonate quite a lot, but I'd still like a handy shampoo as well. What's everyone's view on that JASON brand? I don't think it's that amazing, but at least the shops round here actually sell it.
i really want an alternative to dr b's, i just cant get used to washing with it, it either doesnt make my dreads feel clean or i get flakey hair from it, everytime i tune into a shampoo thread i just get confused and give up lol, I think we need a definitive list of stuff to watch out for in shampoos then, all club together via country and help each other to locate the good stuff in our respective countries
amy, how's the dreadhead HQ for deep cleaning? i know you said before that it was brutal, etc... but like, isn't that a good thing, if the issue is trying to find a product that actually leaves you feeling clean? i'm tempted to try it... or just switch back to a convential clarifying shampoo... i don't know.
Anytime I used liquid shampoo (I used some henna shampoo that was all natural) my "dreads" would get super loose so I switched to bar soap and they are now getting a lot tighter. I know a site called : www.vitacost.com that sells natural products for a discounted price but I am not sure if they ship overseas, another one is called www.iHerb.com I ordered from both sites repeatedly and I always got my packages on time and the products were great.
Yeh the DHHQ is, in some ways, probably the best dread shampoo lol. But, for my hair at least, it's too thorough for regular use, leaving my dreads feeling quite dry and crispy which I don't like. I know I could soften them with a bit of aloe or a vinegar rinse. Actually I might have just answered my own question lol Although on principle it would be nice to use something a little more "natural" than DHHQ.
ive said this before.. when i started my dreads i did use whatever i had.. from normal hand soap like ivory, to head and shoulders ..i tried alot to use natural shampoos as much as i could, but didnt always.. residue free helps alot, especialy early ion, but is not essential.. although..buildup can be a problem. whatever leaves u feeling cleanest is best. i preffer bronners for a soap because at least with the water i have here it rinces clean as can be very easily.. and. because in wilderness camping situations its generaly the only accfeptible soap no other comes close to being as environmentaly freindly... and when we are in the wilderness we are extremists about leaving no trasces of our pressence behind, and doing absolutely no harm to the environment. ofcourse that reason is certainly applicable in the city ass well, doing less harm, but its not the only reason to choose a shampoo. you gotta take into concideration how clean u feel in general i find baking soda seems superior to anything although i would love to try some other natural shasmpoos.. these that amy posted do look interesting for sure, but they are not 100% natural stuill using sls sles whatever....chemicals, that are safe only if you are very careful to not let ot touch your skin long..lol well..in dreads can u ever be sure u got it out 100%?.. if theres a 0.00001% chance a tiny bits left over to contact youir skin and do ya serius harm id rather just avoid all harmful chemicals entirely. bronners proves that u dont need these chemicals to get pretty clean so why use 1 that has harmful stuff u dont need? in philly we have the largest odunde fest in the country (odunde is the african new year) and they have tons of african and jamaican venders, often theres some home made all natural dread soaps made by old rasta women i never bought any but freinds had and said they were amazing.. point is.. soap making takes a lil bit of learning to know how its done, then yioyur able to make soaps just the way you like em. i think im gonna start experimenmting with that myself. i dont know why, but seems hemp/castile soaps are the easiest to do without harsh chemicals..maybe bcmomma can explain why? but typicaly the gentlest purest soaps ive found were hemp/castile based
Maybe I'll stick with sodium bicarbonate and get a selection of essential oils that I can mix and change between, plus vinegar sometimes to balance the old pH. I really want Dr. Bronner's to be the one for me, but I just don't think it is
i like the "environment friendly" factor of dr. bronner's too. and it's a free trade product, so the people making it aren't getting totally ripped off.... and it's got hemp in it. hemp ANYTING rocks! LOL! i think i'm in love with dr. bronner's again... i ordered some of the almond scented... can't wait to get it.... here's a pic of my first dreads.... View attachment 41760
yeah, i want to!!! the first ones, it was just bugging me with the black hands thing.... the wax. the second ones, i don't know what the hell i was thinking when i combed them out... the third ones, my sister was giving me a really hard time and it was really fuckin' pissing me off.... and now these ones... i mean, all of my previous sets had issues because i was constantly using wax too, though. i think my second set got all full of chlorine, and then waxing and not drying properly, it was a mess, let me tell you..... but honestly, if you get dreads 4 freakin' times, you have to start to wonder why the hell you keep combing them out!!! LOL i'm just one of those people that craves change, and sometimes i take it out on my hair
hahahaha! yeah for sure.... changing my knickers* would certainly be easier!!! LOL i mean, keep in mind, when i combed out my dreads the second time, i wanted CHANGE.... i combed them, then dyed my hair black, hated that, then got it all bleached, REALLY hated that, then got dreads again! LOL the second dreads got combed out cuz the wax wrecked them.... thats all.
