If you use Facebook, you should know that the company is now monitoring all live chats looking for illegal activity, inappropriate ages in chats, vulgarity, etc.

And what's worse is they will report suspicious activity to police.

This article is certainly worth the read if you STILL use Facebook!

So if you cuss out your brother and tell him "I'm gonna kick your ass," on facebook, FaceBook will contact the appropriate law enforcement agency, where an officer will be dispatched with instructions to kick both your and your brother's asses? That's one possible use for their service which seems to be intended to pick up the slack Chris Hansen and Dateline NBC are leaving?

haha, I can just see a number of scenarios where this won't go down well with the CIA.

Imagine the CIA has some secret op going and they're using facebook (as usual) to foment some revolution (oh let's say some fictional place like Libyria). And Facebook personnel are alerted to someone discussing planting a bomb. So they report the individual to the local constables who then go arrest the guy, torture him, kill him, kill his family, etc. etc.

Yup a great policy when you let computers decide who is being bad and who is being good. Sounds like an Electrikal Fascist Santa to me.

heh I was more worried this would apply to drugs. Plus I've been on Facebook for like 4 years or so already. One should always be careful regardless, though. Especially avoiding discussion of bulk amounts and direct terms.

    Oh, they're watching you too....

Remember that facebook will NEVER delete your data, and they WILL eventually go after everyone for everything, it's really easy to sell this as "saving the kids", when they go after rapists and pedophiles, but then they'll be saving the kids from horrible drugs like pot, heroin, and LSD:mickey:

I am not shocked by this at all. I think the best idea is to delete most people, once they start to brag or upload pictures that give an detail away of underage drinking, smoking, or just anything that could be illegal. Possibly put you at risk in the future, just by association..

Meh, I don't really have a problem with that. People should always be careful what they say and do online anyway.

And anything - ANYTHING - that will help to catch paedophiles is a good thing in my mind.

What about the pedophiles who run the government and religious institutions? You act like the government and law enforcement are pure and innocent, and serve to actually protect the rights of innocent people.

If you don't have a problem with this, then you probably don't have a problem with much of anything the government does.

That is kind of like me saying if you DO have a problem with it, then you DO have a problem with paedophiles being caught on Facebook. Not really logical as an argument.

I never said that the government is pure and innocent, I just said that anything in my mind that helps to catch at least some of these disgusting people is doing good. It's better than none of them being caught at all.

Yes, people should be careful with what they say and do, and not just online.

But how far is it reasonable to let authorities go under the guise of attempting to catch pedophiles, or terrorists, or whatever is the latest stereotype we should all hate?

Do you REALLY not understand how something like this is dangerous for all of us or do you just hate pedophiles so much you would sacrifice, in your words, anything for just the possibility of catching one of these "disgusting" people?

I've said it a bunch of times before, the more influence government and authorities have over the Internet, the worse it is for humanity at large. The scary part is how many people seem happy to relinquish their human and civil rights just to feel a little safer, often from imagined threats.

dont understand why anyone with an iota of intelligence or a brain still uses it, but good luck to all the agency employees who have to trawl through mind numbingly crap and chatter from attention seekers and those who have nothing better to do with their time. must be a better way to earn a buck surely.
