I have beef I want to use that has a sell by date of Sept. 9th.

If you were me would you use it?

It still has MOST of it's color.

Yeah I will.. I get really weird about meat... I don't even like touching it (when it's raw of course) and have to wash my hands for like two mins.- I do NOT like using expired meat but really I guess it's not even two days expired. It doesn't SMELL bad. .lol.

as long as it doesnt smell funky, you cook it thoroughly, it tastes fine, and its not ground, you should be no worse off than if you ate it on the 9th. ground beef is suspect - occasionally unscrupulous grocers will grind expired beef and relabel it as new. this happened in my town, and it went unpublicized despite being known by a few people. an end was put to it rather quickly, but i still feel the public had a right to know.

sell by dates are NOT the day when it will go bad - it is the date by which it has been agreed upon that it must be sold so that it DOESNT go bad by the time the average person would eat it. you can have bad meat well before the sell by date, and if properly handled meat can remain fresh enough to eat for a little while after the date.

so long as it smells and tastes fine, and you cook it thoroughly, there should be no issue.

Cool ...thanks nesta. Yeah ground beef is weird... I've heard horror stories about ground beef... this is a chuck eye steak that I'm gonna cut up for beef stroganoff... and put in the slow cooker. I'll just be sure to cook it for the maximum time, not the minimum.

should be just fine! and in fact, if you're using a slow cooker, the longer you cook it the better it should be anyhow....

ground meat freaks me out. i eat it anyway :p

I love cats. :D My cats are my babies but yeah.. they are picky eaters... there is no way they would eat beef.. the only "human food" they eat is let's see, Prancer eats dairy products only. Angel eats tuna and bread products only. Neither one will eat turkey or chicken or anything..such weird animals.

I eat ground meat too.. on occasion but I think if it was past the sell by date and it was ground, I would have thrown it out.

Anyways defiantly right about long cook times in the slow cooker... two days ago I threw a cheap cut of steak in there... topped it with tomato sauce, added sliced green pepper and onions... anyways I put it on low and then went out and ran errands for a few hours... then ended up meeting up with a friend for a few more hours... didn't get to eat til MUCH later then I had wanted... I think by that time it had been cooking on low for about 13 hours and wow... let's just say... a not so good cut of meat was so tender and delicious I was drooling. :D

i made some beef stew today in my slow cooker - still cooking

water + herbs and spices, onions, peppers, garlic, broccoli, celery. had that go for about an hour.

then i made some buffalo meat balls. baked them up. while these were baking, i added stew beef to the broth. finished baking the buffalo and added them to the beef stew.

    it smells delicious.

    lol. angel LOVES chips. :D

fitzy.. that sounds good... hmm let's see what i put in today was quite simple.. chopped up the beef so it's kinda like beef stew meat only bigger a bit... ummm whole grain egg noddles... top that with beef broth, cream of mushroom soup, water and sour cream... man i'm hungry right now. i might end up driving to arby's and getting a sandwich soon since this won't be ready til 11 pm.

anyways that's word on the buffalo... i actually bought ground bison meat the other day and made meatballs with them for pasta... and it was very good... i don't know why but at first i was thinking buffalo but it was bison..anyways...
