This music will blow your mind....no joke. Check out Mulatu Astatke.....it is really an audio trip.......
Holy Shit, i didn't think anyone else listened to him. I've been listening to this guy since i saw the movie broken flowers a number of years ago( can't remember when). So far out of all his songs my favorite is Mertsche Dertsche. Not sure if that how its spelled cause i don't have my itunes with me right now. It's good stuff. Glad to know that I'm not the only one.
^^^ME TOO!!! Yeah, broken flowers was the movie for me, too. After hearing the music throughout the movie, I wasnt going to rest until I found him! Thank goodness for Amazon.... I've been trying to spread his music around...burned a few cds for my friends, and they all love it...this guy should be recognized!
I adore Ethiopiques Vol. 4. I've been meaning to get more from that series but never got around to it. Great great music.
Thanks for the suggestion! If you like this, i suggest you check out Skerik's Syncopated Taint Septet below... http://www.myspace.com/syncopatedtaint Mulatu is a little more ethnic/worldly sounding but the syncopated taint is very similar in many other ways. I love the ethnic feel though, i love world music. Thanks again!
Here's a link to another group that I think falls along this category and absolutey fucking rocks... <http://www.myspace.com/budosband>
Thanks man, this band rocks. Not quite like mulatu, it sounds more alive. Probably due to modern aspect of this.
Any idea why its called ethiopian Jaz? Are there like ethiopian improv scales used or something? Its new to me and i def plan on checking it out.
This is extremely ironic, my stepfather is Hailu Mergia and he does Ethiopian Jazz. I have a lot of musicians in my family or associated with my family. My stepdad was with the Wailias band of the late 60s/early 70s prior to Mengistu Haile Mariam and the Derg's hostile takeover. But yeah, the stuff is a real trip to listen to when your high.
Yeah, before I discovered any other music I learned about Ethiopian Jazz. Stuff is so trippy to listen to when your high. But I really had no idea that other people besides Ethiopians embraced this music form.
