Eric Clapton is one of the most important Blues musicians of all time, he was the inventor of Blues Rock, he made the blues louder and much more depressing. The 60's Blues rock musicians started progressing the blues and being able, with the help of Rock, made even more depressed blues sounds.
"Bell-Bottom Blues" and "Layla" have a very depressed sound and lyrics. Nearer the end of the song when Clapton does his guita instrumental that is the best solo guitar I ever heard, it's dark and depressing, it was playing on the 1990 Mafia movie "Goodfellas".

    okay........ you are quite misinformed.

first of all, clapton did NOT invent blues rock.

second of all, clapton does NOT do the guitar solo in layla. that was a slide guitar by duane allman.

Rock and Roll came from Rythym and Blues, and thus from blues and jazz, but also influenced by country music. In the 1940's and early 1950's the Rythym and Blues that started to sound like Rock and Roll wwas mainly done in a jump blues style.
