Enslaved find out that on their upcoming tour, on one date they share the stage with a Christian band. So they do what any self-respecting black metal band would do: cancel the show. Enslaved cancel concert rather than play with Christian band
Wow, I had no idea Enslaved were so strongly opinionated. I always thought of Enslaved as one of the more friendlier or less extreme black metal acts. I wouldnt have expected them to have such a strong standpoint on social/religious/political issues. I love their music but I cant decide if this is a positive or negative step for them... What are your thoughts on this?
I saw them change over the years and I thought it seemed they get less extreme on their black metal views as well (just the impression I got from the music and shows). I'm not suprised to see a band take this action (although it doesn't serve any positive purpose from my point of view), but I also didn't expect Enslaved to be that band.
it doesn't do anything but make them look like pussies. If they were true black metalists, they would play and attack the christian band's beliefs. Instead they just throw a hissy fit. Just like axl rose, except it was the WHOLE band.
I think in a weird way they are making a point about religion that is stupid. If they are trying to remain indifferent about it, and don't want to be part of it, then prove to the world that your sole purpose of being there IS for the music.. Who cares what the music is about, its one show, and the fans are there for you. I doubt the fans give two shits if the other band is a 'christian' band. they want to see enslaved for the music, and they are letting them down imo. I dunno, I find it ridiculous to put a band down just because they sing about god. That christian band was still planning on going on stage even though theres a metal band on there that they probably aren't too fond of. But its the music people should be there for.
I think they just moved on music and lyricswise, but apparently they still feel like they need to uphold their aversion against christianity. Especially when it is combined with black metal, I can see why they'd feel strong about that. Anyway, Slechtvalk isn't explicit christian, they just had some christian themed songs:
As someone else said, they did indeed seem a little more 'friendly', if you will but by black metals standards, to fraternize with religious bands is the worst thing you can do. You would lose so much respect from your peers. So instead of being big bastards and insulting religion, and to save face in the black metal community, they took the middle road to keep everybody at bay. I actually think it is a wise move on their part. But I mean that after considering how bigoted the scene is in the first place, I mean, it would be better of if all these different groups of people got along- there is unblack metal after all.
Yes, if you like progressive metal with black metal influences perhaps you like the newer Enslaved. I prefer albums like Frost and Eld because it's great norse black metal which I'm generally much more fond of as progressive stuff but I also like their newer sound.
I get that side of it, but at the same time its almost ridiculous. Like they are letting religion stop them from playing music. I dunno, it may just be me, but they should make a point that some religious band isn't going to stop them from playing their music. If anything I'd think they'd want to play loud and proud to piss them off.
But then again, didn't dave mustaine do the same thing to them at one point? I remember hearing something about this. He refused to play with them because they were all for satan and he had just 'found god' or whatever.
Sounds like enslaved are worried about their image. Which means all their fans must be about 15. Lol. Lame.
