I was just sitting here at around 1:00 in the morning while on the computer in sort of a half-dazed state, occasionally glancing at the TV while Conan is on, when all of a sudden it goes to commercials and I begin hearing Brian Eno's 'Ascent: An Ending,' which happens to be one of my favorite Eno pieces. So I look at the TV and I'm like "What the hell!" I thought I was hallucinating or something. It turns out to be a fucking Subway commercial. They are using this piece in a fucking Subway commercial! What the fuck! This is a new low for Eno. First, he sells out to U2. Then, it's the startup sound to Windows 95. Now it's a Subway commercial. What will it be next? I am mad!
Damn man, that sucks! Sorry to hear about that. Oh well, doesn't change his music. I can't really picture Eno in any commercial, much less a Subway commercial.
When Eno starts appearing at MTV Video Music Awards grinning and handing out little statuettes, then it's time to truly shoot ourselves.....
i think its becoming a new trend to take music from the likes of Eno and others like Boards of Canada to add some backround ambience to commercials. Aphex Twin did an anti drug ad I believe, (directed by chris cunningham), and BOC did some piece for a car commercial. I was reading somewhere that Autechre also had something on tv.
We all sold out to u2, that was the problem in the 80's.... Anyway, all musicians from the 60 and 70's seem to be doing it, some post mortem like the late great T. Rex, but others, like the Kinks and Iggy Pop don't have the excuse of having died 25 years ago. Thats pretty bad though, a fucking Subway commercial?! Is Jared in it too? (fuck Jared )
Well, I am ok with most of the stuff he produced for them, except their last album, which clearly shows the path in which U2 is headed (or has been heading for years, rather). At least The Unforgettable Fire and Achtung Baby! had some substance. Actually, it's kind of bizarre. This new commercial features kids. Apparantly Subway is targeting kids now with this supposedly "healthy eating" campaign. The commercial features kids engaged in physical activites. It shows one swimming, the other running across a field, and so on. And in between they show the kid's faces, and they're saying stuff like; "I used to be fat. All the kids made fun of me." Then it's something like; "But now I eat Subway and I'm healthy." Then it shows the kids holding up their old "fat pants." It's kind of a weird commercial. It tries to be all heartfelt and sort of melancholy.
I've seen that commercial, I guess I never paid attention to the music though. But now everytime I see it I am going to be upset.
Now, it obviously isn't that bad Matt. You still have him in your signature pic If I had a program like photoshop, I might have tried to make a funny picture out of that album cover with him eating a sub or something.
Quote: Then it's something like; "But now I eat Subway and I'm healthy." Then it shows the kids holding up their old "fat pants." sounds truly horrifying, sorry you had to see that!
Wow. Very surprising news. I never watch TV really and I'm in VA now now so there is no cable anyway. Eno's one of the artists I'd least expect to do something like that.
I think a lot more commercial music than we realize is made by popular artists. Supposedly Richard James has made a ton of money composing advertising jingles. Apparently Underworld's done music for commercials, too. Is it more worrisome when it's a song made for its own purposes and then put into an ad, as opposed to music made specifically for commercials?
The man needs money!!! Everyone's gotta make a living somehow. Why is it selling out? Maybe someone at subway really likes that some....in that case, you should be proud to share the same musical interests as the friendly folks at subway. Personally, I'm looking forward to the day they start playing phish for burger king. Wouldn't that be something? Now there's something to be proud of! *stares off into the distance with starry eyes*
There is a posotive way to think about such an action.... perhaps that commercial brought in enough money that he can spend 30 more hours in the studio this year than he had planned, or buy some rediculous modular synth or something.
this is probably true, but then again, I can't imagine there is any other reason than money that he would do this, unless he thinks it might turn new people on to his music.
