I read an article the other day about how we (as human beings) are drilling to the core of the earth. Is it just me, or is anyone afraid that this will in someway send us flying at billions of miles per second into the sun?

    Seriously...

    The article is here: http://msnbc.msn.com/id/7424677/

Sometimes I think that we should just leave stuff like this alone.

Sounds like an interesting way to create a volcano. I feel sorry for the people operating the drill when it blows, though.

    Yes, people are idiots.

There not actually drilling to the centre of the earth because that is impossible because of the heat and the fact that the earth is thousands of kilomentres deep and they dont make drills that big. They are talking about drilling through the mantle wich is the layer beneath the earths crust which is what we live on. They are doing this to collect rock samples, etc. The magma which makes up the mantle may just seep out rather than gush out and destroy life as we know it. I hope this helps!

Yeh i think it says they are just drilling to the bottom of the crust which is the top layer within the earth, then there is the mantle, the outer core and the inner core. But still its worrying that we keep pushing the boundaries. I worry about what we might try next. x

This has never been done before... I wonder what the outcome will be. Nobody can know for sure.

Maybe, but then, whenever there is a hole in the crust, there's usually a volcano spewing lava. It depends on what they really find, but putting a weak spot in the crust seems like a great way to make a volcano. I guess we'll see...

i used to think that people of such importance are smart enough to make decisions that wont ruin our planet. Why the fuck does it matter how our earth evolved? This earth science bullshit is much less important than the lasting of human life.

Am I the only one dorky enough to immediately think of the Japanese movie monster Rodan?

If you think that's scary, you should see what particle physicists do! A few years back, CERN did some experiments, and they had a spokesman on the news saying there was *only* a 10% chance of creating a black hole in the lab that'd destroy the whole galaxy. Sweeeet.

Oddly enough I get what you are saying, it seems science has no conscious, nothing to make it seem alive or special, its more like just a bunch of facts and theories..You were saying something about Frankenstine. And it's weird that you said that cuz I am reading that book and I was thinking about the same thing...almost. Science is like Frankenstine's monster, it is all a big experiment to me, and when you find out something you dont like you just deny it exists. A lot like Doctor Frankenstine denying his creation after seeing it was hideous...
I dont think I am making scence, but I understand what I am saying....

I wonder if that's what that book is really about: the way science was held up to be something wonderful, but then they found out how monstrous it can be.

Or maybe that's just a modern, nuclear-era interpretation. Science was wonderful, until it devised a way to literally destroy us.

Maybe it is just about Christians rejecting science, like the Catholic Church denying Galileo and a lot of other discoveries. That might have been more relavant back then.
