I suspect we have enough oil for centuries, but the problem will be the cost as the oil companies have to search in more obscure places for the oil and get it from shale etc. Once the price gets prohibitive we'll see a big upsurge in renewables. The questions is, will it be too late by then?
we need to start now, when oil is cheap. we need oil energy to create renewables (the parts, anyways), and it makes more sense to start now. But people are sheep, and the big industries, and even more so the market/their money, leads them. Rational decisionmaking almost doesn't exist on a societal level when it goes against either of those things.
Here in Germany, The renewable energies rise a lot more then the old ones. Also Prices for electricity used to be a lot more expensive from renewable sources, as from coal/nuclear sources. But the renwable one is now almost on the same level as the conventional one. And I am very proud of this process. The electricity from the city-services of my city is even made out of the trash the city produces, and I think it's a great way to use trash for......
Unfortunately, I'm afraid that the US (as a society) is way too lazy, greedy, and SPOILED to undertake such an evironmentally positive change. They won't do a damn thing here until it is too late. The people of this country are more concerned with image and convenience than they are about the problems that future generations will face, or the damage that is being done to the planet. I guess they (the American status quo) are alot like 3 year olds....ME ME ME, NOW NOW NOW!!!
I hope it does than maybe we can start using cleaner forms of energy, like solor power and wind energy
