Hello everyone. Just wondering if any of you have read the series? I mean it is more than obvious where the inspiration for melange comes from! I was reading last night about Leto II during his forced 'worm trip' and how he is being forced into breaking time and reality apart as his father was in the original novel. It's funny because there are many ways to interpret what the books are getting at, but the way I've always seen it, is that the story is just a screen on which to project a guideline for the direction of humanity to evolve further with psychedelics. I mean, the mentats, the Zensunni, the prana-bindu control, the fact that the melange is the balance of control for the known universe, etc. The Litany Against Fear I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain. Anyway Im interested to hear other opinions and experiences with the books, and to share with those who havent read it before my opinion that it is simply the greatest acheivment in literature to date. God Bless! +
I have read the entire original series around 8 times since I've discovered it. It changed my ideas on what literature can accomplish and stretch to, and it changed the way I look at all kinds of things. If you like the Dune books you should check out the Books of the New Sun. They are a lot more difficult reading material but same quality. Anyone who's read Dune knows what I mean by "quality", they really have no peers in Scifi literature imo. I also have his son's books and they are not bad at all, in fact The Machine Crusade is AMAZING . . . If I had to recommend one thing with my dying breath I would be happy recommending Dune. Haha, stay away from the movie and miniseries though , nothing like the books.
Awesome! I've only read the first 3 and the Butlerian Jihad though. But Im ordering God Emperor of Dune and when I have some more moneys I'll get the last two. I've heard very good things Machine Crusade as well as Hunters Of Dune too! Did you see that next month, I think Sep. 16th, they are releasing the Hero's Of Dune series, starting with Paul?! Christ I've barely scratched the surface and 3 more books are on the way! haha Very exciting God Bless +
And thanks man, Im definitley checking out this New Sun business. I looked it up right quick and from your suggestion it seems wonderful And although the quality is no wear near Dune's, I would also suggest the Hyperion series by Dan Simmons, particularly Endymion. That book is just, well awesome! God Bless +
lol that's why i never read the books : ) you guys have some good stuff to say about them though..probly gonna look into finding them.
Aw man, I've never seen the film, but I can imagine how horrible it would be considering that the majority of the book's brilliance is in the thought's that go through the characters minds. Man what torture it must be to have to erase all of that and start fresh!
i've always wondered how movies could better convey the thoughts of characters. i think that's the thing that ruins books in transition to movies. it might be a good idea to stop watching movies based on books! : )
Relayer, if you've only read the first 3 of the original, prepared to get blown away. I almost cry every time I read God Emperor. It is my favorite out of them all, followed by Heretics and Chapterhouse. See a pattern there? The last 3 are my favorite 3. I wish I was in your shoes and able to read them again for the first time. Leto II will change your life dude.
I cant wait to read it! I have 50 pages left of my reread of Children, Im at the part where Stilgar killed Duncan Poor mentat haha. But Leto II is by far the main man, I can sort of see the general direction it's heading with the 'glove' he makes, knowing what little I do about the story of God Emp. God Bless!+
wow, im a bit stoned and i read what you guys have to say about these books, and i must say, its pretty trippy, but now i wanna read them. i just looked them up and it looks awesome. would they be more likely to be a at library or a second hand bookstore? .if that makes sense.
Yea man! I mean it is the best selling science fiction novel of all time. When I went to a used bookstore, I found 3 or 4 copies of the first Dune Good luck and I hope you enjoy it! namaste
