I just heard the Republican candidate for governor here in FL, Rick Scot, says he wants to test all welfare recipients for drugs. My take? What do people with money have against the poor? Like if we humiliate the poor enough, treat them like dirt, insult them, it will make rich people like this turd feel better. Mind you his company paid 1.7 BILLION dollars in penalties to the government for medicare fraud. It's nothing but mean spirited, cruel, jingoistic garbage. When you need votes - attack the poor. That's who is ruining this country. Not rich bastards, not corporations, not banks, not international conglomerates - poor people - that's the problem. Are there abuses in the system? Sure there are. But most of people who get assistance are just trying to put food on their table - clothe their kids - have a roof over their head. And maybe $6.50 and hour on two jobs won't cut it for some families. Are you teaching them a lesson by humiliating them - NO - but your telling their kids they may not eat tonight. It's bad enough to live in this society poor and with no education and no hope without throwing humiliation into the mix. Want some help - go get in line every month for a drug test so you can get help. You can bring your kids with you since you can't pay for child care. I will never, ever, (and I am 63 years old) understand the stone hard heart and lack of compassion by so many people who have so much. And then they use Americans frightened by their economy as pawns to keep what they have. Bastards - and the # 1 Bastard is Rick Scott.
The funny thing is supporters of this say it will save money but one reasons states don't do this(well Missouri passed a bill to do it) because looking into it showed it'd cost more money to drug test recipients than they would save.
Now if they can test the fullness of the children's stomachs before they test anything else.............
Here in Georgia a person cannot even get food assistance if they have a drug conviction, yet a convicted murderer can. Starve the Hippie, feed the Killer. .
I am for the legalization of all drugs, so I can't agree with this: but from a practical standpoint, I really don't see what is morally wrong with trying to clean up the welfare system. (Though all welfare users is rather impractical in itself) It's so heavily abused in low-income neighborhoods, that I really have trouble seeing how much good it actually does, I know this from personal experience. My girlfriend whose family receives welfare, and does drugs, though she does not; likes the idea.
Problem is that welfare recipients are still viewed through the very racist and inaccurate viewpoint of being the stereotypical "welfare mom" that was popularized in the 60's-70's. Clinton's reform bill enacted in 1996 was also based upon that stereotype and not on reality. Sad truth is that the demographic of who is getting government aid today is far from what it was even a decade ago. Most are people who have lost jobs through no fault of their own. To even suggest such a thing as drug screening is insulting to anyone getting or needing assistance. It is also an invasion of privacy and violation of the fourth amendment. It also makes the asinine assumption that there are actually jobs available and the only reason they are on aid is because they are lazy drug abusers.
stamps don't have to be physical to trade them. 50 cents on the dollar here too. sold em for weed money before lmao. adding to what pb said, the small welfare state that we have in the US is due to the racial fragmentation and willingness of the elite to cite social mobility as a reason that minorities shouldn't be poor.
If you've got a habit - you will and do play anybody you can. The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of those receiving help - particularly food stamps, need them. For Christ sake, in this country we can't feed hungry people without giving them a drug test. The whole concept comes out of fear and greed to keep what you have - and you can never have too much. It's the THEM/THEY syndrome. We need to watch THEM closely - they're not like us. They want what we have. They are just lazy. They, they, they - them, them, them. Know what the difference is between a liberal and one of the Beck conservatives - A liberal want to know who. Who are they? Why that might be Ronnie, or Angela or Rolanda or Bill. They're individual damn it - just like you and me - with families and friends. Not a THEM - a great evil mass of humanoids who have no faces, simply a dark cloud made up of killers, drug addicts, whores, thiefs - not like us. Where the hell is compassion and kindness and the willingness to share. It seems those with the least of these qualities are the most "religious". Now if they know the person by name that's different - why I'll bring a dish over Saturday. But screw the dark masses of hungry - that's THEM and THEY are evil.
Ok, now I'm getting pissed! First, to those of you saying you have traded food stamps for drugs, ASSHOLES!!!!! You are the very reason why other political assholes want to do things like drug screening of applicants for aid. Pull your heads out of your ass and understand by doing that you are strengthening the position of the idiots that want drug testing done!!!! You may "lmao" about it, but understand YOU are the reason the other shit is being done! On to another pissed off rant; One thing that compounds the issue is the fact that the U.S. treats drug addiction as a criminal problem rather than the medical problem that it is. In every single fucking study I have read, when drug addiction was treated as a medical/social issue and not criminal, with drug maintenance programs, counseling and access to clean pharmaceutical drugs while working through the ENTIRE problem of a persons addiction, it was successful. Many heroin and cocaine addicts were able to turn their lives around, be productive members of their communities and work on ending their addictions. When in the holy fuck will these idiots figure out that it is the PROHIBITION of drugs that creates the major problems, not the drugs themselves. Guess we didn't learn a damn thing from alcohol prohibiton.
Why am I an asshole Vig? You mean to tell me that you can not see the direct connection between you and other people trading food stamps for drugs or drug money and the politicians wanting to screen welfare recipients for drug usage? Please tell me your smarter than that. Don't like to hear the truth? Seriously, how can you honestly justify your indignation about this thread topic and your trading food stamps for drugs? How can you justify your anger and anti-political remarks whenever YOU are part of the problem they are trying to address?????? Great, now there is the possibility that some little kid may end up going hungry, but you got your weed out of the deal, and on the taxpayers dime no less! I would express how pissed off such stupidity makes me, but I would probably get banned!!!!
