What is your opinion on people who are (whether admittedly or not) addicted to drugs? Have you ever had a friend/spouse/parent with a drug addiction? Have you yourself ever had a drug addiction?

Two of my best friends, sisters actually, who I've been best friends with since the fifth grade, have been addicted to painkillers for about two years now.

I still hang out with them from time to time, (they constantly have 10 or so kids hanging out at their house on the weekends or whatever) but I'll be honest, it's pretty depressing. It's sad knowing people, really really caring about them, and then watching them slowly ruin their lives. And watching their personalities slowly being sucked out of them.

I even feel weird about being generous towards them. I am the kind of person who would gladly buy a friend a pack of cigarettes if they were broke, especially a best friend... but with them, I almost feel stupid for being generous. Like why should I let them borrow money when they constantly waste every cent they have on getting fucked up?

You can give your personal opinions... but gay answers like 'drug addicts are shady' will probably just annoy me.

you can't trust 'em. it's really a pain in the ass being around them sometimes for that reason. i mean, if they're a good enough friend, you can't just ditch them when they hit hard times or whatever, but it's seriously not too much fun having to watch your shit all the time.

I don't necessarily judge people by their drug addiction. I smoke cigarettes, drink, and smoke pot occasionally. It would be very hypocritical of me.

On the other hand, drugs (well, mostly hard drugs) tend to affect people very negatively. This is not necessarily stemming from the drugs, but more out of the weak character of the abusers. I've known some functional hard drug users. They are usually rather intense and at times very unpleasant people, but they still manage to maintain a job and support a family.

At the same time, most hard drug users are weak by nature. It takes a special kind of person to get addicted to drugs (even alcohol). I have no respect for such people, but respect is something that is earned. Drug users who use their addictions as an excuse to harm others are complete scum and should be shot.

I truly dislike drug addicts that do not admit to be addicts. This is a rather common scenario in this modern world because there are plenty of people who are addicted to prescription medication that they're "supposed" to take. I include anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medication in this category, among others. These are the people who will suffer the most for their addictions because they will unknowingly and ignorantly let their addictions dominate them until the addiction feels so natural that life seems impossible without it, and the addicts themselves aren't even aware of it.

It's terribly sad seeing people who are self-destructive :(

I've seen a few of people like that. And I've stuck by them for the most part.. But it gets tiring. They don't seem like the same person. It kind of turns into a one sided relationship.

Every ex drug addict I know is a born again christian.
Every drug addict I know is a religious user.
I have a few aquatints who do/did drugs...

I think either way your a weak individual.
But, a lot of people are weak. Not many people have much independence. Or self control these days.

    Oh well.

I've known drug addicts who were religious, and who were atheists. You totally hang with the wrong grade of druggie.

I'm pretty sure she means that their use is religious, not their faith.

As long as they are functional and health doesn't deteriorate I don't really care.
Most addicts I've met tend to possess the same general personality traits, people I wouldn't really associate with/without drug involvement.
Not that I associate with people anyway though.

See, what do you consider addicted to alcohol? Because I agree that letting yourself get addicted to a substance is a very weak thing to do; however, it's probably arguable that I'm addicted to drinking. I mean, tonight's my first night sober in probably two weeks or so. I don't consider myself an addict though. It's sort of just what I do, pretty frequently, to pass the time.

I think drinking because you're bored and it's enjoyable is different than being addicted to alcohol. I'm sober tonight, and it's not like I'm withdrawaling from alcohol. I would actually turn down a drink right now if it was offered to me. Alcohol has not negatively affected my life in any way... except maybe my liver, but that's not visible to me; so, therefore doesn't matter.
