Basically what it says in the title. Everytime I was it's like i'm taking a few steps back. They look horrible and loops start appearing! Is there anything i can do to sort this out? has anyone else found that this happens and if yeah did you manage to sort it out.

P.S. Patience is not an option as I have to look pesentable for work (to a certain degree lol)

I'd say it's because you've been used to wax and now you've stopped it feels like everything's falling apart. My own personal opinion is that washing is the best maintinence that there is. If you're still not happy then just maintain them in some way, crochet, root-rub whatever, hell even wax if you really want to. Or just accept them the way they are and let them mature.

What are you washing them with at the moment?

I wont be using wax anymore I think it's good only for a few months. I was using some dread soap then I did a big clean up with bi carb and lemon juice etc. But now I just use water cause i don't really wanna mess with them to much! The shampoo might be doing more bad then good

if your dreads get real messy after washing, them shits aint dreads.

and if messy 'dreads' are a problem, perhaps some scissors can alleviate your concerns. my advice would be to cut them shits off or wear a hat. dreads get messy. its just how it works.

I feel like my hair is much much tidier after washing.

Surely I can't be the only one?

wow thanks for the good advice. Turns out they are actually dreads. But funnily enough, some people don't mind having messy dreads, some people do. It's called opinions. We all have them

And that sounds like a contradiction to me.

Personally I find after a wash my hair is 'messier', things start joining together hairs stick every which way, locks get kinkier.. but that's because your hair is doing what it's suppose to do. It's moving around, growing and essentially dreading itself.

It usually takes my hair a couple nights of sleeping on them to calm down again.

I don't have much advice as to how to make them look tidier =D

I definitely feel like washing helps my dreads... I would just try putting some aloe on them. I personally like to use the Knotty Boy tightening gel.

sorry im on some shit right now.

dont worry about that shit, if you want some dreads, they have to get messy before they lock up

.. he COULD crochet them. I found aloe made the hair crispy and gross when I used it the one time. The only problem with crocheting is that the loops that start popping up after a wash are near the roots and it's probably not the greatest to be crocheting so close to the scalp before the hair has had a chance to do anything :/ :hat::hat::hat:

yeah i was actually crocheting the day after i washed, but the hairs kept coming out every time i washed so i figure theres no point. My aloe gel makes my hair feel super soft. i got it in a bottle from amazon, its 100% aloe gel no added ingredients expect water, and some fruit juice. it work great, it doesnt crust up or smell bad, like the other crap i bought.

patience is not an option = dread fail

I'm sorry but patience is the only option, it's the answer to every single dreadlock related question.

p.s looking presentable for work? You have dreads man, no one should expecting your hair to be neat and tidy, least of all you :p

i don't get this whole 'dreads can't be tidy' crap. They can be. It's just a lot of work and you have to be willing to A) take the time to do it yourself or B) have / pay someone else to do it for you

A friend of a friend of mine has extremely tidy locks. He crochets like a mad man and there isn't one loose hair, loop or bump in his set. I don't care for them but it is possible to have tidy locks.

Most people here, including myself, just prefer a little bit more of a mess than that.

:) I suppose with enough time and effort, you are right.

Although there will always be people who, no matter how neat your dreads are, will assume you are a dirty stoner hippie :p haha!

I knew this guy and he had dreads down to his knees and they were completely perfect. They were super clean, not a hair out of place, all the same size... it was crazy. He must have spent such a ridiculous amount of time on his hair.
