I have come to the realization that dreads are an awesome, natural protector.

When I started mine (middle of the summer), I realized that as they thickened and matured, the back of my neck and my whole head would get hotter much faster than they used to, pre-dreads.

I was also walking home two nights ago in the rain, and my dreads were like a rain deflector. The bottom layers weren't wet at all, and they kept me nice and toasty warm.

This is exciting, considering the winters get absolutely brutal around here, and I walk everywhere. It will be like my own little insulation device, thick dreads! It's easy to tie them back if they're making you too hot, but it's also (I imagine) easy to let them hang down and keep your ears and neck warm when it's cold outside.

Just another dread benefit I wanted to share. :)

i don't know what i would do if a big giant seagull launched a giant dump onto my dreads, that would suck. guess i will have to wear a tam over my hemet if i visit the bay area

I'm with soaringeagle too with extreme weather. I hate it too cold, hate it too hot. It is just starting to get hot now and my head is HOT. I'm not too great at putting my hair up either because it feels like I have extra weight pulling down on wherever I've put it up and it hurts after a while. My favourite use for my dreads are to bunch them up under my head and use as a pillow!

We should post some of our favorite dread hairstyles. How do you wear yours up? I often pull a few from the front on each side and pull them back and tie them.

But I recently came up with something way cooler but it's hard to explain...
