hey everyone!! its been 9 months of blessings with my locks. i've learned SOO much from them, and the learning isn't stopping anytime soon I was wondering what you guys thought about dreadlock extensions? i had to split some of my congos i had in the back, and now i have some really short.. kinda gnarly looking dreadlocks in the back. let me know with your experiences/thoughts. BLESSINGS!! love n light~
You'll find this forum decidedly bias. I don't really care for extentions. The half and halfness kind of confuses me. Grow if you're growing or do dread falls from the start. Mixing it up seems strange to me. But I mean, it's your head. Do what you want.
There is enough fake in this world. I've learned to appreciate whats real. So, I would have to say I'm against hair extensions. Just be happy with what you have.
I've learned quite a lot. It's taught me that you can't always have control over everything, sometimes you have to let things happen on their own. Also I feel that I think more about personalities and individual qualities rather than appearances and trends. Keep an open mind, and you should always be learning.
i really want them because i really want longer dreads, but i also love the current length/can wait for them to grow, and dont see the point in 'cheating'
dreads never stop growing.. .sort've, and you have to cut them all off when done. I personally do not see the rush and would rather preserve their longevity on my head.
I have dread extensions! In about 2/3 of my hair. They are about 4-5 inches long. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO CONSIDER IS: was your hair chemically treated before/after having dreads? My hair was permed to hellll before dreads, then I bleached & dyed them at 7 months, then I extended them at 11 months. BAD IDEA. The permed/bleached/dyed hair I started my dreads with is destroyeddd and the weight of the extensions fucked me up. I had a lot of breakage where the extension would break off and take the permed hair with it It's not as bad as it sounds as that hair needed to go anyway... it was crispy and fried. I've removed a bunch of them and my "new growth" hair has grown long enough that I don't care to reextend. Also, extensions are kind of hard to attach via crochet. I am not very good at it. My friend installed mine for me. I have since become handy with crochet and can do my own maintenance/attach them properly SOMETIMES. I still find it difficult. I am, however, amazing at making dreads out of weave! If you decide to get them I can make a tutorial or something. I can probably also find videos of the method of attachment I used I feel like color matching might be difficult for some people. I'm lucky because my hair is simply the darkest brown before black. I bought the human hair and it matched my hair exactly! I would consider straight up dying your hair to match the hair you buy, as two-toned dreads are not a good look unless they are intentional (like blonde tips to dye colors, or whatever) Overall, I absolutely love my extensions. My hair was suuuuper long in highschool and then I chopped it before I even THOUGHT about dreads. I kept a super cropped 'do for about a year, then grew my hair out for a year and a half or so, then dreaded up. My hair grows mind-numbingly slow and I wasn't willing to wait years and years to get back to the length I had chopped. Lemme know if you need help <3 Don't listen to the haters, they have their own hair to focus on
personally, if you want dreads purely for the "look" of having dreads, then extensions aren't really a big fucking deal. That's what I did. but I'm not some hippy dippy person either, I just wanted dreads for the hell of it. If you want to be a true hippy, and have the respect that comes with it, then no, don't get extensions.
it's too much money and work for me. but if you can find some real hair to dread up and use as extensions, i don't see why it's such a bad thing. i've even thought about putting a few funky colored dreads from my old dread falls into my current locks. crocheting them into you existing dread seems like it would work well
I have done this. I made extensions out of my husbands hair, and added it to mine- then I even got blonde highlights(before I went all the way blond) by adding in extensions made from hair my mom had fall out from chemo. It was sort of neat to watch them go through all the baby loopy dread stages , and get eaten up and shrink up. Most people think its weird as fuck.
You're welcome . I'm sure there are some couch fibers and dog hair mixed in there too- my dreads are super sexy.
