Hello, my name is Sadie, I'm 17 and my dreads are now a year old so I thought I'd celebrate their birthday! So first some history... I'm extremely mixed race, so have thick, curly, not afro but not anglo (and very unmanagable) hair which is the main reason I decided to get dreadlocks. My sister once dreaded my hair when I was 15 (she has dreads too, and she's on this forum, so guess who it is if you like haha) but my mum wasn't too happy with it but I got fed up with my hair again so I said fuck it. Fantastic decision as I now have to do nothing to my hair in the morning instead of spending an hour straightening it/applying mouse. I began by partitioning my hair and twisting and ripping. After that I mainly just left it and palm rolled a bit to occupy myself. I root flipped some of them because I was rather impatient, but that damaged has been undone through time. I also crocheted some of the ones I was unhappy with a little bit but only a few months ago and only on the ends. I washed them as usual the whole way through the process (didn't do the whole "can't wash them for the first 2 months" bollocks). Now, I rip them apart sometimes and shampoo'em and they look after themselves. Now for the pictures! This is meeee > Hair form the back Some individual dreadies...First used to be a braid, loopy one is a good example of what a lot of my hair is like and the other is just a pretty bead. Now, this one doesnt exist anymore, so I'll show you a before and after and say how I fixed it It was a braided in fake dread that became a dread...sort of. One day the fake dread fell out (thankfully) and I then sawed the dread in half. I croched the fist half a little to tie in all the broken hairs. The second half (which had 2 ends) I wrapped for a bit thinking it'd join eventually. The wrap fell off and the end enevetably split in two again, but I don't mind haha. The first half turned into my new (and straightest) dread! The other half is just as acceptable, and a huge improvement from the monstosity that took up the back of my head before haha There you go! Sorry if that was long winded, I just like being thorough hehe Sadie xx
Here on HF we can't give your dreadies a birthday cake. But we can give you happy dread birthday PAI ie:ie:ie:ie: Loooove you dreads, SO THICK AND LOOPY And your dimples are adorable
You mean dimple, I'm one of those freaks with only one haha and thanks you guys! Yea the color at the ends of my hair is what happened when I tried to die my hair blonde before I got dreads, shows you how defiant mmy hair is lol
i'm glad you guys enjoy them as much as i do lol cant wait for them to grow more so i can do updos, my hairs now shorter that it was when i started them! will be looking for updo advice when i can though and i never realised they were so thick til i took pictures of them?
It's flippin sweet that you already have righteous dreads at 17... I am also mixed race and the idea of just backcombing my hair and having "free-form-esque" (compared to other black people, at least) dreads never occurred to me until I moved into a Cooperative in college. Post more pics you are so adorable!
Also it's great that you managed to un-flip your roots... I started a set on a friend of mine that were BEAUTIFUL at 1 year and then she let some Costa Rican woman root flip them while she was on a Study Abroad trip... When she came back I unflipped some and told her to let me do them all and she was like "no, they're gonna be fine." And guess what!? All the ones I didn't unflip BROKE OFF. Her hair was also UBER damaged from previous bleaching & dyeings though; She's white with dark brown hair and literally kept it bleach blonde before dreading : X
I never unflipped them, but the flipped bits have just grown down and are unnoticable. My hair's so think I don't reckon it'll pose any kind of threat any time soon! Yea I have my sister to thank for that really, she first got dreads when she was 15 and I was 13 I think so I guess I was just accustiomed to it haha. I just got to a point where I realised that I shouldn't have to feel the need to spend ages on my hair to be presentable haha you're hair is fucking awesome by the way! I don't really take pictures as I reckon I look the same on a day to day basis. But nevertheless here's some more pictures!: (I can't help the stupid faces sorry) Me ad my mannnnn and I'll upload some wearing my favourite headband when I get around to it thanks!
Awww you and your bf are presh! It's awesome that he has dreads too! My partner is balding so we will never be a dreaddy couple LOL. Also you make me miss my lip ringsssssss. Your big sis (the lovely Vanuka, I'm guessing ; ) )is lucky to have such a bad ass little sister! My baby half-sister (she just turned 16, I am 22) is obsessed with One Direction(!!!!!) and is a little preppy blonde abercrombie wearer whose friends are all cheerleaders & whatnot.... I love the girl to death but OOF. hahaha. My mom is pretty nonplussed about how her daughters turned out to be polar opposites even though we grew up in the same home XD
That is pretty weird but that's just how it goes i spose! we're not too similar though, we listen to different music and have different passtimes and ambitions...basically I'm cooler in most ways but really the only thing we have in common is dreads haha and thankyou, its nice having a boyfriend with dreads but he has so much loose hair and won't let me tidy it!!! grr
Anyone got tips on how to dread hair like 2 inches long? used to have the side of my head shaved but I'm growing it out and wondering at what point i should start dreading
