    Hello,

I am new so I decided to post my first thread about dreadlock methods used here in the Philippines.

The guy I hired to do them only used a crochet needle.
First he backcombed and then grabbed the loose hairs using a crochet needle like a hook and pulling the hairs towards the body of the dread.
This method took 10 hours non-stop for my 21 inches of hair and it was totally unexpected and I was really unprepared (this method hurt like hell, like scraping your scalp with a nail for 10 hours)

When I was researching before getting my dreads, I saw a video on youtube by knottyboy where they just backcomb and then wax it up then palmroll it and there you have an instant dread.
It looked pretty fast and painless and so this is what I expected.
Anyway, Im happy that this wasnt the method used on me now that Im learning that wax is no good.

This method seems to be the norm here in the Philippines and other countries in Southeast Asia.
After a whole day of browsing through the forums, i found that no one else had their dreads done this way so I decided to post.

Will try to get a few pics up (as soon as I figure out how) to show you the finished product.

dreads shouldnt cost ypu anything as u saw on knottyboy vids many many places use harmful methods to get instant results
crochetting dammages hgair and can result in breakage as long as u only do it once you may not loose your dreads but repeated use wuill most likely cause your dreads to fall off

asain hair dreads as easily as any other hait if left alone

hiring people to give you dreads is the wrong way to go, almost all will screw you up

your dreads look fine..lil too finbe for 1st day ..i hoipe they stay fine

make sure u dont ovcermaintain them theyve already been weakened, palmrolling and r=twisting and all that crap can weaken them further especialy if u already have significant hairr breakage within the dread

with your hair length awnd techture simply leavin ypur hair alone maybe a month or 2 woulda gotten you to the same state totaly pain free

    and cost free

sometimes i gotta laugh aty how much money peiople spend getting dreads when ythey can get the same results by doing nothing

Soaringeagle, I usually agree with you, but I don't think he would have gotten the same results had he done them another way. They would have come out differently, it would have taken longer, etc. His dreads "look" more mature than mine are (and mine are knotting up fast for one back combing and them leaving them alone), so the results aren't the same. Maybe they would have been after quite a long time, but they could have also turned out much differently. Different strokes for different folks and all that.

Anyway, dude, they look pretty awesome. I hope they remain that way and that you continue to enjoy them. They look great on you!

well true they would probly come out different but the point is they'd come oput just fine if left to do theyre thing without pain without cost and without weakening the dreads or causing eventual breakage

they rely on the myth that asain hair wont dread on its own to sell ya a quick methid that does alotta dammage
asain hair does dread very easily though
my sis's ex for instance was japanese, had hair to his waist and if he didnt braid it every single night b4 going to bed hed wake up with 3 or 4 massive dreads..just overnight
imagine the progress if hed leve it alone a week or 2

hellz yess asien hair dreads fast!

my mates hair takes about a week of no combing to start matting up like crazy and even the beginning of a dread. and he has dead straight asien hair, and uses conditioner(i begged him to stop combing it out all the time cuz it would be soo cool to watch the progress).

oh and plz keep posting pics of the progress.
im very interested in this method, is it more effective then backombing?

Yeah I kinda feel like I cheated, but I didnt know until now. Anyway it didnt cost that much, It only cost me 1,700 pesos or roughly about US$40 which isnt bad considering that the guy was doing manual labor for 10 hours and we did it in my office and he pierced his fingers with the needle a couple of times hehe

well think of what he did to his fingers, multiply that by 1000 thats the dammage done to your hair
a hole in a finger heals broken hair is broken hair forever

each finger prick was accidental and just broke the surface each dread hole was on purpose and driven clear through the dread

    over and over

40 aint bad concidering here u might pay 400

The guy wanted to do maintenance after a week and every month but I guess i'll just take soaring eagle's advice and leave it alone to dread on its own. I was told by the guy who did my dreads that when people from abroad come and ask him to do their dreads they are mostly unfamiliar (shocked even) with the method used locally but are mostly pretty happy with the (instant) results and find it alot cheaper.

instant results pretty much means short lived results they are very dammaging to hair as with wax most get cut with crochetting they can break
natural dreads though are healthy as can be because they nevef had agreessive stressful damaging techniques applied to them

ive thioyght about trying to pull a truck with mine..i know the hairs string enough...but my neck isnt
my nexck would snap way before the dreads

congrats on dreads. if you dont pay for maintanence your root hair will dread, but it will not look the same as your longer hair. just a thought- i tie up my roots (not tightly) about every ten weeks with thread. any way you do it- congrats!

your dreads look awesome, for the "neat style" dreads. i prefer my caveman bumps and lumps and crazy wild shit, but not everyone likes that, lol! how many do you have? it looks like not many, and VERY thick. hope all goes well as they mature!

hey neighbor from Indonesia, I guess Southeast Asian countries pretty much lock their hair the same way.
Well according to soaring eagle loose hair is fine, I had a bunch of loose hairs a day after I got them.
nakedtreehugger, thanks. Your caveman-type dreads are pretty goodlooking too. I have 32 varying in length and thickness. hehe

Hey Kthought, I had mine done is Asia - same way as you. I didn't find it painfull though and my hair was down to my ass and it only took 5 hours. I'm very happy with mine and they're developing a character of their own. Saying that - I haven't had anyone do anything to them for the 2 months since I had them made and I don't think I will get them touched up with the crochett as I think it might cause some hair breakage, my roots have grown out a little and already dreading themselves so I'm quite happy. I've been playing in the sea for the last 8 weeks so that has help ALOT!

Good luck and take care of 'em dreads by yourself!!!!

    :) Jac
