I doubt that the draft will be reinstated, but if it were and you were drafted, what would you do? i know that i will run up to canada, even if alot of people think that this is a cowardly act. i do not believe in war and the killing of other people, and i hope that there is alot of people who would do the same as me.

I'm not sure what I'd do... I'm not even sure if Canada would be much of an option for I hear the SSS has a program going that makes it really hard for dodgers to use Canada as a safe haven. I'm already registered in the SSS... it being a forced decision and all. I think I may file as a conscientious objector (as long as it's not the case where they send conscientious objectors away anyway as troops' luggage mules), I'm pretty much a straight pacifist so I think I have a shot.

My God, I hope it doesn't come to that. I mean that was the whole deal for me about protesting Vietnam - it was a drafted military force, not the volunteer forces of today.

It's the agency that deals with conscription and the draft, the Selective Service System. When you're 18, you're required by law to register for it if you're male.

I'd register as a concientious objector. But since in the current legislation, c.o. people will still be forced into the military (they just wouldn't do combat service) I would most likely go to jail. I wouldn't go to canada though, even if it was an option, because I believe if you're going to break a law, for whatever reason, you have to be willing to face the consequences, or you're not really standing up for what you believe in.

Not everyone registers with SSS. My fiance hasn't. We're against it and consider it just as bad as a draft. Registering for SSS should be voluntary, not mandatory.

My very straight husband is legally gay....when they drafted for the Vietnam war he got the notice to come down to the dfraft board and being the peaceful man he was he asked around as to how he could get out of it and was told by a friend that all he had to do was say he had "homosexual tendencies", he went and as he filled out the questionaire there was the question and he checked Yes.

They put him through the pysical then sat him in front of the shrink there..all he was asked is "do you know what checking this box "yes" means?", he told the man yes and they told him to sit on a bench. After awhile they told him he could go and he would be notified...a week later he got a letter saying he was not fit for military service...4f.

I still tease him sometimes about it..he better behave or I'll tell his friends the truth about him...(not that there's anything wrong with that)..

In 1970 he built a house on the Canadian border in Vermont at the Earth Peoples Park Commune, and in '71 I lived with him there for awhile, the war was still going when we were there and we hosted a few men (7) who went through the woods into Canada.
I still wonder about those guys...
    Hope they all made it..

I too believe if I purposely break a law that hurts some one or their property, I should be responsible, But I will have no part in a war of greed, if anyone were to come here and be a threat to me or mine I would do what I had to, defensively speaking but to know the enemy and have them strike at you I say we all pound them to a pulp, but the enemy of terrorism has no face, anyone could be a terrorist, we have american idiots who went over there and joined al-quida....something that still amazes me.

Would we have ever figured that could happen???
How could we possibly get rid of terrorism??? You don't know who they are till they do something then take credit for it. I see 8 year old kids on tv saying they want to grow up and be a sucide bomber, i see families being held up in awe because their idiot son kaboomed himself and others on a bus.....yeah real heroes..

These americans died over there and it seems few are grateful that we got saddam..now we are talking of handing him back over???
To who, can we actually trust the ones who are in charge?? What will they do withh im when they get him back??

We have to stop babysitting this world at the expense of our own people, this country IS NOT doing as great as they would want you to believe.
And I believe this war is based on saving face with the whole bin laden thing, and the fact we had to go get SOMEONE, and its based on GREED, the breakfast of politicians....

So if they bring back the draft my 20 year old son will go across the border....I know the way....

-sigh- The proud and dedicated eh Mav my boy? My cousin joined the Navy and worked through that. I think as soon as they started to initiate the draft I think I'm gonna renounce my citizenship and move to Canada. I'm tired of living in a country of death. The bird with the blood soaked wings :(

So you let tens of thousands of South Vietnamese civilians suffer just so you won't have to join the army?

Actually, most of the country was grateful. Then all these warlords and sheiks started to gather followers and start guerilla wars with the US, which led many people to believe that the US themselves were the ones causing all the trouble.

And if you're afraid of dying in Iraq, just join the Navy. You can polish battleships instead of your M-16A2.

South Vietnamese were already suffering under the terrible puppet regime that the U.S. backed.

I'm sure the South Vietnamese enjoyed the US pulling out and having the North Vietnamese invading, killing 2 million innocent South Vietnamese.
I'm sure they had a ball.
