    An example:

There is a solution of any given solute in any given solvent. There is a given amount of absorbent material to absorb said solution. When the absorbent material dries it will contain an amount of solute. The amount of solute in the dried absorbent material is determined by two things: the amount of solute dissolved, and the number of individual pieces of absorbent material.

Absorbent material is saturated and layed out to dry. Now, the absorbent material was not able to absorb all of the solution. Once the absorbent material is dry, it is dipped again to absorb more. The solute that remained in the absorbent material after drying the first time does not dissolve in the second dipping as there are three factors that affect the speed at which a solute dissolves: time, heat, and agitation.

    The common misunderstanding:

The term 'double dipping' is thought by many to mean that the material is stronger. In fact that is not what it means at all. It is simply a way to absorb all of the solution with a given amount of absorbent material without having any solution left over.

i think that some small amount of the solute WOULD dissolve back into solution during the 2nd dipping. it just makes more sense to make a more potent solution to begin with.

A small amount may dissolve. The trick is in figuring what amount of solution a given amount of absorbent material absorb. If that isn't figured out, then double dipping is the other option.

    You have misunderstood here.
Double dipping is not about potency. It is about being able to absorb all of the solution that has been prepared without having any left over.

as stated before, the potency of blotter is dependent on two main things: the amount of solute and the amount of paper that it goes onto. if another sheet is dipped, then you have upped one of the factors. Now, the solute is spread among more units. thus weaker potency.

probably, as you said before, they know how much liquid each sheet will absorb, so they dissolve in a known amount of solvent that X amount of sheets will absorb. at least that's how you could do it accurately.

or they are just dosed out of their minds, and do it however which way, accounting for the huge variability in blotter potency :)
