Don't carry any weapons in Amsterdam.!

When I was there last I was riding my bike through Zeedijk, the street that connects
Warmoesstraat to De Waag.

Anyway while riding along minding my own business, I noticed ahead of me 10 Policeman
making a human barricade across the street and further on again in the distant another
10 more Policeman spread out across the road, in effect sealing each end of the street.

No joke, they were stopping EVERYONE and searching them, young, old, tourists or
Dutch. I thought being on my bike and approaching at speed, I would be waved through
the blockade but no chance. It was quite bizarre they were searching even old grannies
hand-bags to tourist back-packers, literally no one got through without a search.
I had about 5g of weed on me only but as it was a soft object in my pocket they ignored
it, only concerned with unusual hard objects which I had to show, ie, mobile phone, PDA, keys, etc.

Just be warned, don't carry weapons or anything that the Police find suspicious, I'm sure
they would not hesitate to run you in if they found a weapon, overly large amounts of
weed or class A drugs, afterall somebody must be dealing, supplying and dispersing
these drugs over the city in large or small quantities.

Just play ball with the Police and oblige if stopped, they will soon let you on your way and
they give you a leaflet like the one below to explain what just happened.
So now you know and don't panic when you see the Police in large groups.

I've heard they make random stops anywhere they choose especially around
central station. Not sure if they would do much if you have more than 5g on you.?

Luckily I had nothing on me but I collect WWII stuff, like German military antiques
and the like, this trip I luckily decided to stay away from buying such stuff, as
innocent as my intentions, thank god I didn't have my authentic German army
knife on me that flicks out, complete with that notorious German Eagle logo on it.
Getting it back from the shop to the hotel would have been hard to prove.
Items like this are highly collectable by certain dealers in auction houses.

 

Believe me. in holland it is just not done to have annything to do with weapons of what kind ever. Just dont do it. If you are caught you'll be in reaaaaaal deep shit!!!!!

I'm not trying to scare anybody, believe me I go to amsterdam every year and never have a weapon. But your advice is wrong evil icecube. not to mention you can't make those kind of guarantees. Being precautious is better than being misled in my opinion.

At least they're lookin' for weapons and not drugs. Although I too have heard recent horror stories of people getting stopped and harrassed for being over the 5g limit.

I don't know how you manage to haul around that weapon of mass destruction in your pants and retain such a healthy figure, but more power to ya sista!

 

When I was stopped, when we were all stopped that day in Amsterdam
I saw no sense in aggravating the situation, afterall I had nothing to hide.
However in the UK the Police can do the same sort of search or itleast
ask you to empty your pockets but here you are under no obligation to
comply until they make an arrest. You do not have to give your name or
address or show anything your carrying until they read you your rights
if stopped on the streets.
Invasive as it is and imposing, it's always the best option to play ball
with them and I don't want to scare anyone but they seriously had no
interest in the 5g of weed I had on me. He had some leather gloves on
and felt in through my clothing knowing damn well what it was but if I
had one of those tobacco tins or some sort of canister I'm sure they
would have opened it and I'm sure quite a few tourists use these things
to hold other harder drugs, so be warned.
Overall I felt totally embarrassed having to stand there arms outstretched
with a policeman half my age, well not quite but he was young, searching
me right in the middle of the street, but looking around everyone else had
to endure this check too.

Be warned though, some groups of men usually from poor Eastern Europe,
pose as undercover policeman and trick you into emptying your pockets
and of course rob you, so if your young and on your own keep your wits
about you. I saw one typical beggar constantly pestering and following
a young teenager on his own, I was just about to step in when this tall
Dutch guy appeared out of a shop, grabbed the beggar from behind at the
neck and yanked him back with brute force and pinned him against the
wall. The poor teenager was scared shit-less from this beggar and
couldn't get rid of him.

Enough of my negative ranting for today, it's not all gloom in Amsterdam.

Two suspects have been arrested on Wednesday in connection with a shooting incident which began in a cafe in the Amsterdam district of De Baarsjes. A number of people ran away and an exchange of shots ensued.

At around 17:30 a man was injured in his leg inside the cafe, which is on the corner of the Balbaostraat and the Baffinstraat in Amsterdam-West. The man was arrested inside the cafe. The police found a gun and drugs in possession of the man.

Some other suspects ran outside and an exchange of shots were fired in the James Cookstraat. Her another man was arrested with drugs in his possession.

The police say the incident almost definately has to do with drugs.

No worries koopa, thing is us Brits are renowned for all this hooliganism
but according to the BBC news last night we are not as bad as we used
to be, but of course some it still goes on sadly, even organised.

Truth has it the biggest worry is Polish footy supporters, they are now like
what the British were 10 years ago and if they actually end up playing
Germany it could turn nasty apparently.

Another huge problem is Spain and France who's supporters like to taunt
the black football players with monkey chants and if it happens they will
be deducted points.

You don't see any of this racism or hooliganism in American football do you.!
