(a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property. (b) The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise. (c) The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free. (d) The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker’s desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general. (e) The flag should never be fastened, displayed, used, or stored in such a manner as to permit it to be easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way. (f) The flag should never be used as a covering for a ceiling. (g) The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature. (h) The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything. (i) The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown. (j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart. (k) The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. http://www.presidentmoron.com/contact.php#flaglaw Imagine if all that was a criminal offence ? IS IT A CRIMINAL OFFENCE ?.
lol, I don't think it'll be possibl to fly the scottish flag upside down... I must say the american flag DOES look better upside down
Due care and consideration must be taken to ensure that the Scottish flag is always flown the correct way up Apparently you can !.
well why would anyone invade iraq killing untold civillians? which is the most offensive cause or effect?
Are you sure you posted this comment in the right thread - what are you talking about - what has this got to do with upside down flags or anything regarding the use of flags ?.
gardener said draped over coffins hence soldiers in boxes theres a war going on in iraq you know so what is the most offensive cause (the war on iraq) or effect (draped coffins and people making reference to this)?
I agree Guy if you are going to outline the limitations to it's use than our government should also comply. Not try to use it to glorify unspeakable attrocities.
When a flag is draped over a fallen soldiers coffen, it is not being used as a receptacle. The coffen is the receptacle. There is no desecration in this situation, just the opposite in fact.
It is being used for delivery. And propaganda. Why don't we drape the caskets on innocent civilians killed by our military for the cause. Because it might bring focus on the number of deaths we have caused?
Therefore, when the flag is in such a condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display and no longer represents the ideals that this country stands for, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. Yes, see above. Amendment to ban flag desecration dies by a vote in Senate http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/06/27/MNGL4JLDTN3.DTL
I agree. You can't have it both ways. If it is a symbol that supposedly protects our freedoms when it fails that goal it should be open to whatever means to protect said goals and freedoms. Or do we seek to deify it.
It is not being used for a receptacle or for delivery, it is being used to show respect to the fallen soldiers who died to protect what the flag represents. The only time the flag draped coffins were used for propaganda was when the pictures were leaked and they were/are used by the anti-war movement.
in times of war being made on smaller, weaker states for no other reason than declaring war on them and stealing their property in the name of freedom. you need to pretend the poor sent out to wage this war are heroes and all praise is heaped upon them. when they come back in boxes, by draping the box in the flag disguises the fact that they have died for nothing more than to feed the avarice and stupidity of the ruling elite. it is said that people must support the troops regardless but for the civillian populace to do this who disagree with illegal military action it doesn't ring true. the rebuttal to the lie that you must support the troops, is that the longer you do support the troops the longer the war rages as the troops have no voice, the longer you support the troops the stronger the "government" becomes to persue its reckless course. infact i would say it is your duty not to support the troops - for their own safety.
