I've always dabbled in skateboarding, always owned a board, but was never serious about it, and I stopped for a couple years and lost most of my skill (but got better at maneuvering, somehow). The older I get, the harder it is justify to myself. I always worry about breaking my arms if I fall (which is actually extremely rare). I've never liked vert, don't do vert. But I've always idolized Rodney Mullen and love street skating type tricks. Basically, my question is - are their any skateboarders out there that haven't had a major injury? Have you been skating long? Is injury guaranteed, is it avoidable?
I don't skateboard, I do other sports. Regardless of the sport you play. If you want to improve the only way to get better is you will need to fall. Learn from your mistakes. Everyone does, just depends how far you take it. Some people don't know how to fall either. That can really fuck up you'r body. When you know you'r going to fall learn how to break it. Halfpipe riders know this best.
If you board wear padding no matter how many kids keep telling you how much it bothers them. If I could borrow their wrists, knees, elbows and skulls and give them back after skating I would never wear any form of protection again. I don't really short stick much anymore and never got good either. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaeOUVDa5A4"]YouTube - Skateboard Accidents / Bails New Video
Helmet is a must.. on that note.. people who don't get injured skateboarding, mountain biking, snowboarding.. any non-trad sport.. is bound to get injured.. if you don't then you're being a pussy and not pushing your limits to see how far you can go.. personally.. i bike.. and have dislocated my shoulder a time or two(mainly from my pre-existing injury of blowing out my rotator cuff in high school)... ican't even tell you how many times i've gone over my handle bars... and then there was the one time i concussed myself from racing with a friend on bikes.. i went around him.. and there was a huge duvet covered by grass and leaves.. i flew over my handle bars... smashed my head into some gravel and the side of my face slid(wasn't wearing a helmet)... the whole side of my face was road rash and bleeding.. seeing stars... dizzy.. nauseated.. got back on my bike and road home
Some people don't care to push their limits. Comfortable where they are at and whatnot. (Not meaning me, I have tons've tricks I wanna learn =P)
I quit skateing at least for now, I cant take the risk of having to take time off work for an injury, last time I skated I sprained my thumb and cheese grated my hand on the pavement, it's not high school anymore.
If you skate like rodney mullen, at least early mullen, just flat ground freestyle you will probably never break anything, and that shit is crazy technical. Also knowing how to fall helps, never put your arms out when you fall, great way to break you arm wrist or both.
Yeah, that's why I specified, I think that makes me far less likely to injure basically anything but my arms, ass and ankles. And trust me, mine isn't that technical =P There's a few things I used to be able to do that were pretty cool, like getting in and out of casper and in and out of primo that I just can't seem to do since starting up again. (Couldn't actually slide on them, just get in and out of position) I can still kinda get into casper, but with way less success rate, and not nearly as smooth. Can't ice skate anymore either =P
That's absolutely ridiculous. Not everyone is in it for the thrills or the cool factor. Not every bicyclist is a speed demon or trickster - most just wanna have a little bit of casual fun. The most dedicated skater I've ever known; the one that skated everywhere basically only wore skate clothes and skated everyday that he could, never did any tricks. He tried it, but as much as he liked watching it, he didn't have fun that way. He loved riding around with some slick bearings and loose trucks, and just weaving down a big hill. Should I not get a license because I don't care to drift, burn out, or put my pedal to the floor?
im not saying one must go to extremes... but.. as long as you have the rush... thats what matters... if you're not getting a rush from it.. you need to up your game
When you put it that way, I mostly agree. But still.. a rush isn't what everyone is looking for -- the dude I mentioned would always argue with my friend about this(ish), and he always talked about how relaxing and escaping skateboarding was to him, and that's why he did it "not to be cool and do tricks" (He actually got his rush from tagging =P) I mean skateboarding's usually thought of as an extreme sport - but neither he nor I really use it for that. (I do get a bit of a rush, but my aim is just to have fun and hopefully learn a new trick every once in a while)
skateboarding and longboarding today is more of a hipster thing than an extreme thing... fuckin hipsters... ruinin good shit for all of us... biking.. boarding.. PBR.. fuck hipsters!
Primo isn't that hard, i used to be able to kick flip to primo, not anymore. I could never get into casper, i always ended up smashing my foot under the board, becareful of that I just snowboard now, you don't need to know any tricks to have fun doing that.... Hipsters ride bulls now? oh man..
Ahah, longboarding definitely is. I wanted to be extreme when I first got a board at 12 or 13 - but I quickly found that casually street skating was where the fun was for me. When I get money I'm totally snowboarding though :afro:
i wanna learn to snowboard once i know my shoulder is in much better shape... before i start doing any hardcore trail riding again i want to get a shoulder brace... i know my shoulder is getting better.. i can throw further this year than i have in who knows how long.. still i dont push it.. could throw a one hopper from center if i needed to atm... but until i know my shoulder is really strong.. i dont wanna take that risk.. i had a spill and fall at work 3 years ago... and landed on my bad shoulder.. i couldnt move that shit for a week almost... docs gave me ibuprofen and t3's!!! i was like I'm a 10! a 10!
