i have had people "whisper" to their friends that i am bf. they "whisper" just loud enough for half the store to hear. do you ever get ppl who laugh? not that i care, bucause thats not stopped me in 3 years. what types of rude things, beside being kicked out, have you had to put up with?

Oddly enough, the only time someone made a scene was in the middle of the forest! It was enough to put me off barefooting for a little while.

I had gone hiking in a nature preserve that was great for walking barefoot -- I never saw another soul when I'd hiked there previously -- when I ran into a woman on the trail. She looks down, stops, turns around, and exclaims, "I can't believe you're doing this barefoot!"

Then, in a moment of horrible irony, another woman comes walking from the other direction. The first woman points at me and says to the other woman, "This guy's barefoot!"

At that moment, they both looked at me, expecting me to explain myself, and I just mumbled something about having a hard time walking in sandals before walking briskly away. They must have thought I was crazy, but they really embarrassed me! Why couldn't that woman have just minded her own business?

I had one lady in a gas station say it was against the health codes to be in there barefoot. She embarrassed me in front of other customers.

I haven't been back to that store.

Working mostly retail jobs in my life, I've had plenty of people come in barefoot, and every time I've told them "You can't be in here without shoes".
Most of the time they shrug, leave, and probably write real mean things about me on the internet. Sometimes they get all indignant about it...because dammit, it is THEIR RIGHT to step on glass or god knows what and get gangrene and put my store out of business for it.
Whenever they argue about something as silly as the effort it takes to put on fucking shoes, I understand that they're probably not going to spend any real money anyway, so I remind them that if they're such nature-conscious hippy children of the earth, they shouldn't be patronizing my evil corporation anyway.

We live in a world so full of fear, prejudice, and irrational beliefs. Going barefoot is part of a healthy lifestyle, contrary to popular understanding. When I get comments while hiking nature trails I give them the benefit of the doubt- that they may simply be curious. I answer all their questions honestly. I say it feels good, it improves my posture, allows me to hike further because shoes give you blisters and stinky, gross, weak, deformed, infected feet.

Because mean people and control freaks SUCK. That's all I can come up with. I rarely get anything that bad. Often if I speak to them I can actually convince them that it's all right. But for pity sake, don't let these miserable trolls put you off your freer ideas. Please!

OH. YOU again. How nice. Yeah you really belong in here. Sound like someone from the generation before me. You also sound like someone who posted here two years ago. Maybe you're not the same person.

Try putting the responsibility on the barefooters, where it really belongs, rather then banning them. Have a sign on the entrances of your store saying something along the lines of "Bare feet AT OWN RISK." Surely much better than adding to this litigenous age and playing control freak.

When I feel like I need to put something on, it's flops. I never wear shoes except in the dead of winter. Rest of the year, sandals generally, or flops, slip on and off real quick.

Here's a dialouge of something quite funny that happend to me, I got into school on my bike bearfoot and next door there is a Primary school, So when I went to put my bike away some kids noticed I wasn't wearing shoes. They only seemed to ask two things, 'Why are you not wearing shoes; and Are you not wearing shoes'?

Having been without shoes for 12 years, I've come up against all kinds of questions. I always answer with one of a series of prepared statements and a smile.

Whenever I'm off island* and an unenlightened, frustrated soul attempts to bar my entrance to an establishment, I just say "OK" and keep walking. The poor fellow/lady is invariably at such a loss, they end up giving up and don't pursue.

The reactions of others will be determined by and large by your behavior. Whenever I go to formal events such as state dinners, graduations, etc... I dress well and act like I belong. I don't stare at my feet and mingle normally. The only reaction I've gotten in recent years is "I admire your consistency".

When confronted by amazed spectators in public, I enjoy using it as a forum to educated these folks. If being barefoot is such a novelty that they don't know how to react, you are presented with a golden opportunity to blast away myths, generate a positive image of our way of life and just possibly make a convert. I've gotten more than one individual into barefooting this way, and once the feet are bare, a more gentle, perceptive and considerate life is likely just around the corner.

*At home in the islands, no one really notices and no one cares. For this reason, among many others, I prefer to remain in Micronesia for the most part.

I was a recently an a biz trip and stayed in a hotel I've stayed at many times before. They had a small breakfast room where the continental breakfast was served. I always go in there bf. Why not, do you eat B-fast with shoes on? This last time, the front desk biatch came in to clean up the room since it was about time to close. She saw that I was BF and said I couldn't be in the B-fast room barefooted. She said it was against "Health Code". I said it wasn't and she insisted it was. I very politely explained that the Society for Barefoot Living has documentation from all 50 states that indicate the are no known health code rules barring people from being barefooted in an eating establishment. This isn't to say an establishment can't have it's own rules regarding this. To have these rules and use the excuse of violating health codes is plain ignorance.

No, I can´t really say. People notice I´m going barefoot in the store. Some people look a little. If I meet an other barefoot person, it will get a special kind of look in recognition and kind of fellowship.I mostly get positive reactions.
