I'm interested in your point of view about a DJ in rock. Do you consider it an instrument? I personally do. I've been DJing for a couple years now, and I've also DJed with a rock group about a year ago for a while. There's a lot more to it than just spinning a record, you're actually taking a sound or sounds and manipulating them. I think DJs add a lot to the environmental sound of a band too, and can contribute to the sound of a band as much as any instrument can. Look at bands like Incubus, Deftones, Lostprophets, Slipknot, Ill Nino, even Linkin Park. 311 throws some down every now and then also.
Yeh i reckon the decks could be considered an instrument...modern instrument of course and generally more technical and more hands on than a lot of instruments? Incubus have it pretty much spot on i love the use of decks in some of their tunes...as for the other bands well i dunno not really my sorta thing i'd rather just listen to a dj play on his own to be honest!
Only one response? This was written mostly because of vincetvega, in the Linkin Park thread. It just pisses me off when people can talk about music, then call DJing bullshit.
DJing is definitely not bullshit.....if we didn't have these awesome djs around we wouldn't have all the awesome club remixes i LOVE to listen to
yaa the tables add a lot to tha mix. But I prefer samplers if there is a choice. The decks are best suited to ravin and hiphop, but a few classy DJ's can play with metal groups and blow the roof off. Depends.
