Disturbing Trend in Medical Marijuana Laws
By: T.A. Sedlak (Author of Anarcho Grow)

Yesterday, January 11th, New Jersey's legislature passed a bill to legalize medical marijuana. However, their bill is noticeably different than those already passed in thirteen other states. New Jersey is the first state to legalize marijuana for medical patients, but not allow patients to grow their own. Instead patients are forced to purchase their marijuana from government run dispensaries.

While most proponents of medical marijuana appear happy that New Jersey patients can at least legally possess their medicine, others look at the bill as a step back. The facts are that dispensaries often charge steep prices that medical patients can't afford. Many patients are already encumbered by large medical bills, and forcing them to purchase their pot from the state is a burden. They're happy that they can now possess it, but more has to be done.

New Jersey's decision doesn't appear to be a singular case either. There is currently a bill in the Wisconsin state legislature to legalize medical marijuana, and Senator Tim Carpenter (Dem) recently tacked on an amendment that would continue to make it illegal for patients to grow their own. However, there is little buzz about this within the medical marijuana community in Wisconsin. Like folks in New Jersey, many people in Wisconsin just want to get possession legalized.

Still, there should be a simultaneous movement for the legalization of possession and cultivation. Proponents should not only tell people to write their representatives supporting legalization bills, but also tell them to let their representatives know the legalization of cultivation is necessary. Otherwise, the movement is just going to switch from “Legalize our Medicine” to “Stop Taxing our Medicine.” Let's try to get them both passed at once.

Well, in in an enlightened society it would be legalized, but.....
How about starting with decriminalzation. Lets empty out the jails and prisons of those busted for simple possession.

^ Starting with decriminalization? That's aiming a bit high for now. And I can definitely get why they would want to do this. Jersey's in a deficit even moreso than everywhere else, idk about wisconsin. But really any step in the right direction is a good one.

OK I see you are young and dont know the real deal. Yes we should decriminalize it first. Take away the stigma of it being wrong and illegal and then we can work on making it legal afterwards. Its al about perception. It maryjane laws are over 70 years old after all. Time for a change. But its going to be a difficult road.

Sparrow, may I suggest you research the reasons why marijuana was made illegal in the first place. It wasnt just about the movie REFFER MADNESS, basically it had to do with big business and HEMP.

Al Capone and Watergate were red herrings to divert the countries attention from the Fascist acts of eliminating competition. Booze/Ethanol or Ganja//Hemp. While GOP and DMC continue to bicker over nonsense. Farmers still can't grow. Drugs and Ganja are Gateways to prison profits and copshops over flowing in high potency doughnuts. They drink with their plan colombian coffee btw! Not your mothers doughnuts either!

What's bizarre is this prohibition has lasted for so long, based on racism and lies. Are legislators that stupid, or do they have vested interest in prohibition profits? I feared it was the later. Yet, Burlap and Crack are both Schedule#1 Narcotics? Maybe not. 98% of the "marijuana" eradications saveding the kiddies is non-psychoactive ditchweed. Now that's bizarre. Big numbers though. The Drug Bizarre has to lie by law, that's bizarre. Or is it law by lies? 2000 died from Aspirin last year, are we to outlaw Willow trees?

"...the primary reason to outlaw marijuana
is its effect on the degenerate races."

Okay I see you maybe don't know how to deal with reality, or maybe don't know what decriminalization means? It's the removal of any penalties associated with an illegal act. Or maybe you do know what it means. Regardless of how the laws were made, why they were made, or how long they've been here, they're still here. The government's still here too, enforcing them. Decriminalization is absolutely not where to start. The government, y'know, the one with the power over you and I, isn't going to up and reform. It's a process. They need money, especially now, and you could look at this like a negotiation. They need incentive like taxation for them to begin to make it legal.

Change is not something our government has been good at. I can't understand why we are still letting so many outdated laws (of which many were created by through the lobbying efforts of major corporations in that period) still hang around. Why are we failing so miserably at adapting to our new world?

The two party system we currently have is so focused on blocking/stopping each other that they've abandoned all reason and logic.
