so when your indulging in your bong, when you take a hit, how long do you hold in the smoke for? does it make a difference?

I usually hold in for about 5 seconds...

5 seconds is good, you hear people say different things. But anywhere from 3-5 sec. is perfect IMO.

I usually hold it for more like 15 sec, but that's because I like to push it out as slow as possible, and just letting the smoke ooze.

I hold in my first rips until I get that numbing feeling at the bottom of my throat/lungs (between 5-15 seconds depending on the weed) and get a great headrush. When I'm already buzzing I'll hold them in for around 3-5 seconds.

I heard that it doesn't really matter, as long as you fully inhale it into your lungs. I usually do a very quick inhale, then a slow exhale. I've also heard that there's no point in holding it in because the smoke goes stale in about 5 seconds anyways....
